Replacing CueTec Shaft

I am shooting with a CueTec Thunderbolt (I know, I know...:embarrassed2:)

I find this particular shaft to be the worst I have ever played with regarding picking up, well, GUNK and feeling like crap in my fingers. I have cleaned it using some of the fine tips here, burnished it, etc. but I find it's goood for a bit then feels awful. I find that I can replace the shaft with an OB-1 Shaft - Cuetec Joint 3/8 x 14 Black Collar 12.75mm from Ozone for $200.00. A predator Shaft for this cue doesn't seem to exist.

Any thoughts?

you ought to just go ahead and buy a different cue. for the 200 you're willing to spend on another shaft you could probably spend on a complete new cue.

I managed to fix this problem with sandpaper. I ran out of options, so I sanded through the top layer and found the grainy wood underneath. It didn't take off very much wood overall, but it was definitely worth it.

I would agree, eBay your Cuetec or sell it local and watch the Wanted/For Sale section on here. There was a Predator conversion with a custom shaft and leather wrap that was selling for under $200 the other day. I think you'd be happier.

You can get either Predator or OB shaft with an unfinished joint. If you buy from Muellers or Joe Nielsen, for extra cost they can add the right joint if you can't find someone local to do the work.

It's weird that you would have sticky problems with a Thunderbolt being a wood shaft. All other things being equal, switching to another wood shaft probably wouldn't solve that problem.

I'm curious to know what type of shaft maintenance you're doing but if you've already made up your mind to change then I hope it's for other reasons you may not have mentioned. I know Cuetec gets beat up a lot here, but as far as playability, their wood shafted cues are really quite okay if you like a stiffer hitting cue. Not a lot wrong with that.

Good luck!

i actually like the thunderbolt quite a lot and i have ALOT of shafts! being wood, it should feel the same as any other wood shaft in terms of slickness in your bridge. getting another shaft wouldn't change that, i would look at how you are maintaining your shaft. another shaft would certainly offer you different playing characteristics if that is what you want, but if you aren't taking care of your shaft right, it will still eventually get gunky and the same as yours now.

Cuetec R360

Try a Cuetec R360 shaft. It does not have any finish. The R360 is also a low deflection shaft with a layered tip.
