Steve Hines was a great player, I tried to play him a time or two, but he wasn't "receptive".....sometimes the "hustler becomes the hustlee". ;)

I have been hustled by a hustler before, but even then there's a code of ethics and this particular guy beat me out of my money, but refused to take my jewelry and my cue (he had me way off base...if I had all the money I had "forgiven" and got stiffed for I could buy a new Lamborghini.....and it's all chump change compared to what they do on Wall Street to people ;-).. if you're conning someone in an unfair game....or you don't know them very well it's always best to put up the dough.....find someone to hold the money, then find someone to hold them .

Sometimes when one hustler beats another there's what's called an "out of court settlement" where the guy agrees to settling for half or some reduced amount if the debt is settled immediately....you see there's no "small claims court" in gambling and the laws are VERY stern about trying to collect by force....the upside is you can win a LOT more off someone if they don't put the money by letting them "double up to catch up", however, you risk not collecting the total amount due (so you're in effect gambling twice....and if you win too much they may not pay you at all.

I know a guy that won 187k off someone and didn't get a cracker.....I would have went to the guy and settled for 10-15% right away, but you have to have instincts for that type of situation....10% of 187k is better than 100% of nothing ;-)

thats right always post, and make sure the steak dont leave the room.

one night i was holding he stake, about $1200 is all, but it was 30-40 guys 15-20 on each side that built corporations for the game, it was mostly $5's, $10's, and a few $20's looked like $20,000 had it been c-notes. Well I forgot i was holding the $$, oops I went to the card room next door, we cut a hole in the fence so it wasnt a 1/2 mile walk. I get to the Pai-gow table and am sweating the degenerate gamblers(i used to go there to dig up a game of pool). So i'm there fat, dumb and happy, when a gy i know comes running into the card room-straight for me. WTF?!?!? oops, sorry man. I was escorted back to the pool room a hour later and settled it all up. 80% of the guys knew me so no blood no foul. I stone cold walked out of the room with the whole stake, and these guys were brokes and most were all-in on both sides, lol. And yes they let me hold again, as they knew it was a honest mistake.

then stiffed me when I won because......you guessed it - I Didn't Make Them Put Up

That's funny, I did that in Mobile Alabama. I was holding the "up money" for a match Cliff was playing and left with a girl and went to a bar down the street. We were enjoying ourselves and I got a frantic phone call asking where I was. It was only at that moment I remembered I had the 4k in my pocket from the match.

We hurried back to the pool room and squared up.....ironically, I bet on the next set and won....and the guy stiffed me...brutal, they were so worried about me taking the up money, then stiffed me when I won because......you guessed it - I Didn't Make Them Put Up the Money. I really should know better, but we all make mistakes. ;)

I learned a long time ago in Houston Texas that if you don't make them put up {the money} you may not get all the money, and sometimes not any of it. The golden rule of the gambling game is "Post Toasties".....that means Always put or it's not totally for sure...unless the game's completely fair and you truly know the person you're playing. I was hanging out at my pool room "CJ's" behind the bar of all places....I really didn't spend a lot of time back there, but this day was the exception. An older man came in, sat down and ordered a soda...I knew how to "mix" that one so I got it for him and set it down.

He said "you are the professional pool player CJ aren't you?"....I replied "yes, that's me, unless I owe you money LoL"....he laughed, took a drink and said, "no, you don't owe me money, but I would like to ask you a question"......I suddenly felt his tone turn serous and wondered what this older man was up to "sure, you can ask me whatever you want" I said, leaning against the cooler.

The man pointed at the pool table and ask "what are you trying to achieve playing that Game?"....I hesitated, thought and replied "I'm trying to be the best player I can be, maybe even the best in the world, at least once".

The man place his napkin between us, looked into my eyes and said firmly "you know this Game you play is already perfect in geometric design....it's up to you to uncover it" and immediately turned over the napkin and looked under it....."Do You Understand" he said firmly again "The Game is already perfectly designed, it's just up to you to uncover the Perfection", again he lifted up the napkin, looked under it and then quickly back into my now de-focused stare.

His eyes by now felt like they were probing my "inner world," and I shifted, suddenly feeling disoriented, and answered "I think I understand.....it's not me that has to be perfect, it's the game, so I don't need to try to be perfect, I just need to Uncover the Perfection that's already been placed there...in the Game.....by...uhhhh".....he smiled at my hesitation and finished "by the Breath of the Universe or The Breath of a Higher Power, right now that's not as important as you believing the Game has perfect qualities!

He then told me to hold on for a minute and went to his car and brought back a book which I read and still have to this day. This was one of those occasions that influenced my future and looking back I find myself wondering if this old man was really an old man.....or...maybe a "cosmic messenger"...no, that would be silly now wouldn't it?..;)...hmmm, I still can't help but wonder :groucho: 'The Game is the Teacher'

What was the name of the book?

Just got done reading this thread. Fantastic stories C.J., I can't wait for the book........

pool's mental game to increase focus, concentration and the ability to get into Zone

What was the name of the book?

'A Parenthesis in Reality' was the book he gave me, it applied to more than just pool. It was a "deep read" and at that time it fit into several other disciplines I was discovering.

I recommend 'Zen in the Art of Archer' and 'Inner Tennis' as great books for pool's mental game, to increase focus, concentration and the ability to get into "The Zone".

'A Parenthesis in Eternity"

Who is the author?

I appologize, it's not "Reality," it's "Eternity"......Freudian Slip?

The Book is 'A Parenthesis in Eternity".....by Joel S. Goldsmith

I'm not recommending this book for pool, however, it may be of "other" interest.

Gotta post "Post Toasties" I didnt one night, against my better judgment, i played this guy for 3-4 hours, i was up $200, we were just playing $50 grind sets. It was 1:30am and the guy opened the double doors to the pool room to air-it-out at the end of the night, I heard him racking the balls starting another set(i was up 4, he wouldnt raise the bet and it was last set, another bad sign something wasnt right),

I was facing the wall setting down my water when stopped hearing the balls(he couldnt have racked that fast), i knew i was in trouble. I turned around and I have never seen anyone running so fast in my life-to this day. He didnt have a car, never saw him again. I drove around looking for him, it was on the edge of town so he was most likely in a ditch somewhere in a field.

The real rub is the next night at another pool room i blow 2 $100 sets in less than a hour and paid. ouch!!.:mad:

I'll ring you later this week, need to talk to you, will be a funny looking number i'm still in Germany, thanks

LOL Eddie...true here as well. The problem is, say you get as well known and as skilled as C.J. Then you'll find that few are willing to play you even.

Nothing wrong with playing for the enjoyment of it alone....(just my opinion)

I think we all have had doses of that through the years. I've been stiffed on the "last barrel" more than I could count, but it's really bad when you don't get paid for a long "ahead set". From my experience, if the money isn't "put up" and I win a significant figure I'll have to end up settling for half the money.

I have a friend that won almost 200k and demanded all them money.....he go 0%. My suggestion is to always "settle out of court" and take 20-50% RIGHT AWAY, because "one if the hand is better than two in the bush". ;) 'The Game is the Teacher'

I have several road trips with Omaha John and Weldon Rogers

WOW I cant stop reading!!! Very good read!!! Thanks CJ!

Thanks, I have several road trips with Omaha John and Weldon Rogers that I haven't written about that have some of my favorite stories - will do that as soon as we're completely finished with the TIP Banking Video.

We also have a web site under construction at www.thegameistheteacher.com if you want to check it out. My training facility is now finished in Dallas/Ft. Worth and I'm giving private lessons teaching a variety of techniques including 'The Touch of Inside' and the 'Stroke of the Samurai' ;)

We have our first draft of the new TIP video, I'm looking forward to introducing it very soon.

Orrin Cleeton - Owner of Cleeton's Pool Hall where I grew up playing pool.

We were all in first grade and talking at school about this place where we could play a game called "pool". I had seen the game on TV's Wide World of Sports with players like Lassiter, Fats, Mosconi and Hopkins was even coming on the scene. Those shows were really well done and the characters of Minnesota Fats and Willie Mosconi were fascinating to me.

We agreed to go there after school and a group of us walked the 4 or 5 blocks from the school to the town square. The square was as you would imagine with a variety of stores - grocery, clothing, 10 Cent, Cafe, City Hall, Plumbing and Electric and a Bank (among others).

We went into the Pool Room and was immediately over whelmed with an aroma that became deeply embedded in my psyche, the mixture of cigarette smoke, burning fire wood, and I could see traces of spilled sodas, and chewing tobacco all part of the deeply stained wooden floors.

Looking back it was a very small place with only three tables, however at age 7 it seemed huge with a wide range of sights, unfamiliar sounds, which triggered a sensation of infinite possibilities. I believe it was "love at first sight" while looking at the first table with it's red cloth, array of scattered billiard balls, down to the older Brunswick with it's blue cloth and further to the end table{by the wood burning stove} with it's pale green cloth faintly visible over the side rails. My mind absorbed all the new information quickly, and it seemed strangely familiar, of course it was just my imagination.

I'm not sure if I believe in destiny or not. At times life seems to make sense and then suddenly things change and it makes me wonder what's in store. If anything was meant to be in my life it was my relationship with that game.......that mysterious "pool game" with it's infinite possibilities - that would take me on a journey that always had something to do with that game, that same game from Orrin Cleeton's little Pool Room in Green City Missouri. RIP Orrin,

I wish Orrin could of seen the influence he had on the life of a 7 year old that came into your business over 40 years ago, just passing time with his friends from school. And although I had some excellent teachers at school, my most influential teacher and teachings would come through the Game.

I can't help but wonder what would have happened {to me} if there was no 'Cleeton's Pool Hall', I'll never know so I believe it may have been destiny, or could it be just luck? ;) www.thegameistheteacher.com

CJ,

Will you be putting anything out on the mechanics and how to develop a good stroke?

Thanks, Dougster
