Reshot routine - cue tip at base of cue ball

Being a newbie to the game, 2 years now, I notice when I miss a more lengthy shot, I accidentally put side spin on the cue ball. It doesn't take much to throw the ob off line for a miss. Lately, I have been practicing my stroke quality, and have found I seem to do better with cf pro taper than wood straight taper. Also like 12.5mm amd above. I also get a bit punchy, and sometimes stand up to quickly, common amongst newer players. In our no hc open league, I still hang with the bigger fish in the standings, so I must be stroking it pretty well. I like this topic, I think good comments will help people.

I often wondered if Busty does that on purpose. I aim for center ball and end up hitting it anywhere from 2 tips left to 2 tips right, whatever ever english I put on the cue is just as much of a surprise to me as it is my opponent.

Back when none of us could run five balls, my friend had to follow pretty far for position. He wound up good and hit it hard and drew the ball five feet.

Been around a lot of good/great players over the yrs and a bunch have done this. some have said its a 'line up' aid and others said it sorta 'pre-sets' their follow thru position, or both.

These higher hits aren't all created equal and there are several reasons they can happen with the most obvious being an early elbow drop. But this is def possible without an elbow drop!

As one example, for players that have a bit of a dip to their stroke due to how the cue pivots in their loose hand, it is quite common to hit higher than they cue up. That dip makes them cue up lower on the shorter warmup strokes but occurs later on in the full stroke causing the same feel, with a stable elbow, to hit higher than they appeared to cue up to the ball. It's not that the tip comes up off the plane it started on (tho some def do like the elbow droppers), it's that it stays on its straight path longer before dipping to the cloth.

Really, just the very loose clasp on the cue, combined with the decel of the warmup stroke before the cb, makes the tip dip below the level that the stroke would go through on if it kept accelerating. So, when the final stroke is delivered, it comes through higher than where it dipped to on the warmup.

That actually made me laugh out loud, just as LOL signifies.
I think all of us on these pages at some point went for that awesome 2 table length draw shot and ended up executing the perfect by the book stop shot, I hate when that happens.

For the type in my example, the player just cues up lower than they hit but everything stays straight and aligned. But there are def guys that employ the old hustler trick as bob mentioned and always cue up the same and then hit different. Ismael paez made the world championship final in 2001 i think and he always cued up center ball and then put all sorts of body english on his shots and ended up striking the cb where he needed to. Thats a totally different animal than the guys i described who merely dip off their stroke plane in warmup strokes but then remain on it to go through the ball a tip higher.
