I have a bem cue with no stain. To put it simply can it be roughed up and re coated with poly with a little stain in it?Or does it need a complete refinish with stain.

To add coloring to the finish would cloud the grain. You're essentially painting it, but not so thick as to completely obscure the grain, but it won't make the natural patterns in the wood more evident. To really make it look right, all the finish should come off so the stain can penetrate the grain of the wood and make it 'pop'.

Actually, it is very hard, if not impossible, to stain maple and make it look good once a finish has been put on unless a pretty large amount of wood is removed. The sealer or finish soaks into wood at different rates depending on the hardness of the wood at that particular area. This of coarse then makes the new finish soak in at different rates causing blotching.
