Resurgence of Straight Pool

You thought they were wrong? Billy is dead on in his calls in these matches in my opinion. Awesome knowledge of the game even though he doesn't claim to be a straight pool player.

I did think they were wrong a lot in the Archer/Parica match.

No damage today. One more match between Schmidt and Archer about to start, then 4 matches tomorrow.

You cannot tell me someone who runs 100+ has not gotten a sweet roll or two to help them along.

Wow, I strongly disagree with this. The only thing a good player needs to run 100+ balls is for something bad to not happen. If you want to consider it a roll to not get a bad roll, fine. But you certainly couldn't call that a sweet roll.

A sweet roll implies something you could not have planned had to happen for you to continue the run. I don't know what your straight pool background is, but this is simply not necessary if you know what you are doing.

don't know if he did any more damage today, but Thorsten ran 112 and a 149 yesterday, 1 short of extra bonus money.

Rg

John Schmidt finally woke up and ran a 169 today.:D

Some pretty good runs for accustats.

Brunswick and Diamond don't build scoring mechanisms into their tables anymore. I don't believe Diamond ever did. That certainly hasn't helped the game of 14.1 stick around.

Billiard Mfgs. probably don't supply counter mechanism's for the same reason auto manufacturer's don't put ash trays in their car's anymore... ;)

I plan to author a book tentatively titled, "Why pool is Dying". Or, "Please, let's bring back the game that almost killed it the FIRST time".

I just want to thank everyone for their great input. i really do love the game and I hope it spreads even more. TELEVISION BE DAMNED bring on more straight pool.

I totally agree...NOT! A return to the 30's and 40's (before television) is the shot in the arm pool really need's right now. Theres some REAL forward minded thinking. :) While we're at it, lets bring back Balk-line Billiards and Bumper Pool. :boring2: :boring2: :boring2:

would you rather have the 69 Camero with more chrome than 100 Harleys? or would you prefer the new Prius?

just because its old... doesn't make it worse...

Sofshot,

Well that's funny, cause what you say about 14.1, is what alot of people say about one pocket! I would rather have a dead rat in my mouth than play or watch one pocket! It is like watching grass grow, or old people fu&*ing, it is slow and boring and it is amazing how people who can barely play pool(other games), can play onehole at a high level!
14.1 is the chess of pool, one pocket is like chinese checkers!

Jeremy!!!!!!!!!

Jeremy, I have to think maybe you've not had some good time's with one pocket. Like maybe some old farf beat you out of your lunch money at it ?
And you're right, Efren, Scott, Gabe or Joyner really suck at other games.

GM did not keep up, and its showing now!

Poor analogy softshot. Toyota just became the largest auto mfgr. in the world, and GM is near bankruptcy. I don't like it either, but thats life.

Yeah I never in a zillion years thought id enjoy watching Archer play straight pool or almost anyone for that matter. And Johnny was more Johnny than usual. Slow etc.

Danny and Billy were wrong over and over and i dont think they admitted it 10% of the time.:) Funny as hell though.

Still the best pool (the whole show) I've seen on the Internet.

Couple pf things .

Billy and Danny are watching a monitor that doesn't clearly represent the table/angles to them and the fact that they see other ways out just shows there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Now what's the deal with races to 60 for guys like this? John S. was saying he had only missed 2 shots the entire event but he had a 1w 5L record.

dick,

its obvious from this thread that 14.1 is making a resurgance. look dude you dont like it b/c you think its boring? it doesnt make good tv? or you just cant play a lick? i mean come on pool is almost always horrible tv unless you love the game already. even when you do love the game it can be a little tedious to watch. i dont think anyone here thinks 14.1 is going to "save" pool. i dont think pool can be "saved". it will probably never have an appeal to the non playing public. we are talking about how a new generation of players are rediscovering a great game. a game that requires a player be skillfull in all aspects of playing. if you cant love straight pool, then thats fine, everyone is entitled, but dont make the mistake that just b/c you dont like it, its a bad game, or bad for the sport.

thanks

You are right Brian, I guess I do come off that way. I guess I want to see cuesports succeed so much, and the only way it ever will is through TV endorsements. I just strongly believe there is a way to package the game,to give it a chance. I also believe the game I love, one pocket, or straight pool, are NEVER going to give it a fighting chance to succeed ! It's making great strides in the Asian countries, and the Philipines. And they are NOT doing it with 14.1 !

I feel it is a giant step backwards, and I know I offend some people when I voice that opinion. For that, I should apologize. Straight pool is not a BAD game, I just think it is the epitome of what makes pool appear so boring to the uninitiated, casual viewer.

dick,

no need to apologize for your passion. we would all love to see pool rise to the same status that other sports enjoy. i'm just not sure that will ever happen, but i hope that it does. in the mean time we sure can personally enjoy the game we love.

Thanks for keeping it friendly Brian, but you did miss my edit. ;)

And, in case you missed the pre-start publicity, today is the first day of the new session of the Straight Pool round robin at Boomers Billiards in Sturtevant, Wi.

all this does is show how much more of a factor luck plays in 9 ball.. the luckiest player that day wins the tournament not necessarily the best player.
I respectfully disagree with you again. That same person who had the 139-ball run is also susceptible to "getting lucky" in 9-ball just as much as his opponent. I agree that short 9-ball races do not accurately measure or compare players' skill levels, so perhaps your point would be better illustrated if the 9-ball races were longer.

The essence of my disagreement is that the strongest straight pool player is not necessarily the strongest all-around player, but they do have a serious advantage...:)

Well Steve, I know of your straight pool prowess and I am not going to argue with you. I stand corrected.

I find some of your responses offensive not because of the content, but your style of delivery. There is nothing wrong with having strong opinions...but there are ways to state your opinion and respectfully disagree with others.

I think comparing games to old people having sex, having a dead rat in one's mouth, etc. was a bit much...even if you were trying to be funny.

And on a more substantive note, one-pocket is more of a chess game than 14.1...comparing the former to Chinese checkers over-simplifies and demeans the strategic part of the game.
