Cuemakers.
Short Version-
First I'll ask the question, then if interested you can read the details. Can I send one of you a shaft that is from a local cuemaker (long gone) and have your retaper the shaft to your taper, or at least a less stiff taper.
How much would you charge? Is this common, would you be offended?
Long Version-
A top local player here, a machinist, started doing tips and minor cue repairs. This progressed until he started taking house cues and making sneaky petes. More progression, he started making better playing cues and more details to rings and wraps. I think at this time he was buying shafts from a cue component supplier, they were okay.
He eventually bought some "seconds" shafts from Southwest, and started making his own short splices. Seldom with points, usually just cocabola, or curly maple. I had him make a titlist conversion for me. It played very well, not world class, but very good. I think the better shafts and obviously, more experience he was making some pretty good cues.
So my friend is probably up to a total of 20 cues made. He is a nice guy and would do anything for ya, but a little like Bill Hagan, takes another job and moves away. We havent seen him or heard from him for about 3-4 years, I miss my old friend.
Anyway, I was able to pick up one of his early cues. It is a bar cue that has been cut in half and nice ring work a the joint "A" and "B" and on the butt some really nice work. The shaft is as stiff as a "wedding d$$$", but has alot of material and I was thinking if I could send it to a cuemaker he could retaper and take some of this incredible stiffness out the shaft. It is all straight and has PLENTY of material.
I understand that this cue isnt going to be a huge money maker for me, but I really dont care if I spend a little on it. I will probably keep it for sentimental reasons obviously.
Any thoughts?
Thanks Guys!!
