Shaft size (tip width) affects mainly squirt, but also how precisely you can see exactly where the tip contacts the CB. Those are the two things I like about my 10mm tip.

With a tip that small it also helps to have a non-parallel taper for stiffness - mine is conical (straight from tip to joint).

Yes, but smaller tip size usually means less end mass (unless denser materials used).
