Revo on custom cue—blasphemy?

But how will it alter the hit feel?

I think it will change the "feel" to what the feel of the tip/shaft combination is no matter what butt you use.

I wanted to put a revo on my southwest but predator would not make a revo shaft with the custom pin to match a southwest butt so I had to abandon that idea but I would have had no problem trying it.

Now, I just bought a used 12.4mm revo shaft with a radial pin and am using it with my old icebreaker 2 butt simply because it's the only butt I have that fits the radial pin.

I've also asked Jeff from AE cues here in Colorado to make me a custom butt that should be ready in a couple months so I guess I am doing exactly what you're asking about. I'll let you know how it all works out but right now I'm struggling to get used to a low deflection shaft after playing with a standard shaft for most of 30 years or so.

I've been told by many cue makers over the years that almost all of the "feel" that you're asking about comes from the tip you use. I believe that and don't think the butt of the cue affects the hit as much as some people think.

The sound comes from the tip and ferrule. The feel comes a little from that and the taper and wood choice and how it withstands vibration either as a unit or changed with a dif compression wave.

A Meucci won’t hit like a boar because one made a tip change.

But a spiney shaft changes its hit feel less from cue to cue....a weakly tapered shaft will keep its self together a little better on a stouter taper butt. Especially if day the butt end is “meatier”......that’s just physics the larger mass shakes off excess movement with less structural change.

Tho generally we prefer density to be our main compensation for this in regards to our taper in cuemaking. Or we would be using large handled soft wood cue butts.

I don’t think anyone’s looking for 2” cues any time soon lol.

The shaft should shoot consistent in aim cue to cue, but feel change is gonna be broader.

Stay within a tip diameter (12.-13mm) from center....a typical tip width of contact is 3mm roughly. So one actual tip size is 3 tips of English.

Now just shoot the ball straight, touch of inside, touch of outside is all one needs.

I put a Mezz WX900 on my Scruggs. It pockets from anywhere and puts whitey where you want it next. The sound of the hit doesn't mean much when the cue will play exactly as you expect.

And I did the same to my TS, but with a Gulyassy SPTX, and my cue ball talks to me.

I wonder what Mr. Gus would have to say about this?

Converting my Revo to flat faced 5/16-14 was the best thing I did. Now I can use it with more of my favorites

I wouldn't, but I like maple and shafts made to go with the cue. I adjust quickly to new cues, and find that is part of the fun in buying cues.
