Rewrap on a Searing cue.

Escott Cues
I am doing a re-wrap on a Dennis Searing cue. I have a question on what’s underneath. At first I thought it was masking tape but it is too thin and isn’t sticky. It peeled off easily. It almost felt greasy under the jagged cut paper. It might be wax paper and it is wax not grease??

Any one know the purpose? Is it just to build up the channel to make the wrap flush?

Full disclosure, I am not a cue maker. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was something along the lines of golf grip tape. It's my understanding that Dennis has a love for golf and I could see him using this solvent activated "tape." But, yeah. If you can get a hold of him, Dennis is obviously the best person to answer your question.

i am not a cuemaker but i would like to know if you ever get a hold of him.... ;)
and the answer ....(y)

Simple solution to a simple problem. Easier than building up with veneer then sanding down. As long as it's not noticeable it won't make any difference.

Are you going to replicate it or do something else? I guess it depends on the wrap material you are using.

I got an answer back from Dennis. It was what I was thinking. He said the original wrap was thicker and the tape raised the groove for the wrap to be flush. The jagged cuts softened the rise.
So this is now at least the third wrap on this cue? wow. I see the new wrap is black but I can't tell much else. is this a linen or a leather wrap? My guess from it being shimmed is that it was leather then linen and now linen again? Show your work! I bet it's first rate from watching your posts over time. You seem to want to make perfection a never ending quest. That is a worthy quest!

Solid black linen. I don’t have the cue anymore so these are the best I can do.

Very common. Believe some call it fine line tape. It slightly builds up the groove to make the wrap flush with the forearm and butt sleeve.

That is a very clever trick I have not seen done before. But I am going to make a guess of why the tape was cut jagged. The tape was put there to make the wrap fit flush to the finish. The angle cuts make it to where the linen does not not have a lump when it gets to the end of the tape. Those fine points will be non-noticeable. That is one of the best hings I have learned on here in a long time. Too bad we rarely do linen wraps anymore. Wish I had thought of this thirty years ago.
