Reyes' first appearance

Ray Martin just took Reyes down 8-6! Of course, I don't know the details of the match, but the IPT site indicates Efren had 3 B&Rs, Ray Martin only two. That suggests to me there may have been a reasonable amount of tactical exchanges involved. I don't know.

Anyways, as I said in an earlier thread prior to the event, I always thought the older players would do better in 8 ball than they did in 9. I also mentioned Ray Martin specifically as one of the players I was curious about due to his immense pool knowleadge.

Now, can anyone see Ray Martin beating Efren playing 9 ball these days???

Not knocking Cool Cat Martin's game, but I believe this is Reyes' first tournament since his eye surgery, that may have something to do with it.

I actually thought about that as I was writing the post. I guess we'll have to wait and see how they do in subsequent rounds to establish a pattern. But wasn't the surgery supposed to improve his eye-sight? I know from a friend's experience those things don't take a long time to recover from.

Yes, if everything goes well laser eye surgery should improve acuity and has a quick recovery time. Occasionally there are problems with the procedure, such as seeing fog, star shaps, or distorted images, but I hope thats not the case. Any sort of change in vision can affect a pool player; changes in acuity lead to a change in percieved ball size (or size of anything for that matter), and that may take some adjusting.

I just caught myself feeling sad for Efren. Everytime he does poorly in a tourney I fear that his star is finally fading. Of course then he turns around and whoops everyone the next time around.

From what I know, i think he participated in 3 tournaments since his surgery before this one. He attended the WPA World 8ball Championships in Fujairah, where he lost to Bustamante in the Final 32. He then attended an invitational tournament in Taiwan, and placed third. Last week he played in Japan, and I don't think he placed very well in that tournament.

Maybe he's still adjusting to his eyes...that's what I'd like to believe. But he hasn't particularly been playing lights out since the DCC earlier in the year. Don't want to jump to conclusions, cuz he's still alive in this tournament. Go Efren!

Wtf??

Okay, i don't know what to believe. According to Kirsten Pires, IPT's daily sportswriter, Reyes BEATS Martin 8-6 instead of the other way around...

http://www.internationalpooltour.com/ipt_content/ipt_online_event/sportswriters_day3.asp

However, the IPT's official scorecard on the webpage says that Efren LOST to Martin 6-8. I don't know who to believe?

Please, anyone who is out there in Orlando, PLEASE clue us in on the real info. Thanks.

Okay...i'm guessing that Reyes indeed lost to Martin, because in Kirsten's previous post, she was saying that Reyes was losing to Martin 7-4, but then in her later post says that Reyes wins 8-6. Impossible for Reyes to erase a one rack loss. I forgave Kirsten for spelling the name of Mike Sigel incorrectly (spelled it "siegel", or something like that)...but you just can't post incorrect scores!

Agreed, especially after making the previous statements, she needs to double check her reporting before posting.

On a side note, Manalo is now 11-0:eek:

Yeah, my guess is Reyes lost indeed from your second post. Meanwhile the Manalo/Bustamante powerhouse continues. They are still undefeated in day 3.
I believe Manalo is yet to lose a single match in the tournament so far! Geez, he's so dominating whenever he plays well!

Yay...it "appears" that Reyes shutout Dodson 8-0. This will definitely help out his GLI. Hopefully, he can continue with his momentum.

Speaking from personal experience on LASIK. It does immediately improve your eyesight. In my case, my eyesight got even better over the next 4 to 6 months after the surgery. Here was the problem... I had never seen (at least for as long as I could remember) balls, pockets, etc, so clearly, so it screwed up my playing off and on for about 6 months. After I got used to the "new view" I had of the table, I played much better than before.

So, maybe that's going on with Efren. Maybe he's just not yet used to this new vision... it can take you for a loop sometimes.

Later,
Bob

Thanks for sharing, Cane. Are you telling me that he'll be ready to take home the next DCC? Boy, oh, boy.

This may be it. It's hard for us to know since this type of surgery and the impact on one's game is such a personal experience.

I watched Martin beat Reyes 8-6.

It seemed Efren was a little slow getting into stride, but I was also impressed with Ray Martin's game. He is cool headed and still a pretty smooth player.
