Richard Black cue info

A buddy of mine came across this vintage Richard Black cue and asked me to see what I could find out about it. The cue has been fixed at some point in it's life and if I were a betting man, Timmy Scruggs did the work. We live in the Baltimore area and I have seen a lot of Timmy's work in the past. One shaft is original and one made, again I believe, by Timmy. In any event, have a look and let me know what you think;

Richard Black is a copious record keeper. I would say he has a record of every cue he ever built.
Just contact him and I am sure he can tell you who it was originally built for. I know you don't want to do it but there may be something written under the wrap.

Is it signed?
 
Thanks for the info. Removing the wrap would be my buddies call. He has had this cue for some time and is curious to it's value, etc. The one ferrel looks to be the old micarta type material. The second shaft has a ivory ferrel. It is a cool old cue...wish it could talk, bet it could tell some stories...

I couldn't find any markings but I don't think there is any doubting it's one of Mr. Black's cues...
 
i dont see anything that makes it a black for sure although probably is.
what looks strange is the ring right above the points. was the cue broken there or something? you said it had work done.

value about 1500-2000 my guess if things are okay.
 
The cue was obtained as is. The ring does indicate that it required some work done to it. Again, if I were to guess, maybe that section was warped and needed to be straightened? Just shooting from the hip but that would be my guess...

This is a FACT!

I have had Richard build me two cues and he could tell me everything about my cue 30 years later from his little box of index cards. Even his wife was able to tell me about my cues from the 1970's.

The ring at the points is where I believe work was done to the cue, for whatever reason...hoping to get a better idea of why a repair like that would be done to a cue, or....maybe it was built that way?
 
The forearm probably split up top. The joint collar could have been reused on the forearm extension. Does the maple forearm grain look like it runs the same along the length of forearm or is it 2 different pieces? It must be a repair, no builder would add a joint above the points like that.
 
Both above and below the added ring it is BEM. The grain looks uniform but I firmly believe it had to be a repair at some point in this cues life. Neither the ringwork at the repair or right under the SS joint matches the ringwork in the buttsleeve or above the wrap...
