Ring game...

So I was in a ring game and the guy before me scratched and I had this spot shot on the 3....

So what would you have done. I could obviously make the 3 in the top corner. But it was tough shape getting to the four ball(I had to go in the side or pretty much get straight in on it. the diagram is a little off). The way I played the shot was to cut the 3 in with top right corner with some top right. It came off 2 rails at the perfect angle. I just came up short about 2 to 3 inches. I did end up finishing the rack off with a bank cross corner and just a slight angle on the 5 to get down table. but, I wouldn't want to have to do that again. So how would you have played that shot. I didn't want to give the shot back to him obviously. But, was there another option that I am missing on the 3?

Darn so can anyone tell me why my wei isn't working?

Your WEI isn't working because you left out the brackets. You need brackets around the WEI and /WEI to get this:

CueTable Help

As far as your layout goes, the 4 ball is really the only catch I see. I would say that, assuming the 4 goes in the side, the highest % runout from here would be something similar to this:

This layout has 9 screens, and you need to use the arrow buttons to see them all.

Good luck!

It is a ring game right?
I would have plaed the 9.

They are playing a 10 ball ring game. But, he must have come up with more than 2-3" short on shape to have to cross corner the 4.

BTW, people, there is an update to 'Shockwave' today to version 10.1.

You're right, I didn't catch that. It must have been 2 or 3 feet, or maybe he meant cross-side instead of cross-corner. Either way, the inside english certainly didn't help.

He could also draw to the side rail and across table to shoot the 4 in the corner, if the side isn't an option. But it looks like it goes.

It looks to be a 10-ball ring game.

OK, DUH, did not even look at it this close. I just instinctivley thought 9ball when I read 'ring game'
ok
so I would have tried for the 10 either via carom or combo.

Since it was a side pocket cut there wasn't that much farther that I needed to come or maybe there was lol I really don't remember exactly how it fell but just semantics. To whoever said inside english didn't help...It was actually running...you come off of the 9 and the cue ball is taking a path to the right. So in this case right english even though the cut is to the right was actually running .

HAHA...I always do that in a game. I will see the nine ball flying and scream money ball. then you remember, uh wrong ball damn it lol.

That is an option I hadn't even thought of....Maybe it was cause the table we were on is like playing in the mud.

The way the balls lied I couldn't follow past the nine. I did look at that but the nine was right in the way. The diagram obvioulsy wasn't perfect. I think maybe the 9 was a little higher up in the rack.

Oh, so you actually caromed off of the 9 for shape on the 4; I get it now. I didn't see any mention of that in your first post, but that certainly changes things around a bit. If the hit on the 9 was unavoidable when using follow, then I might have tried low-inside to come two rails b/w the 9 and 7. If the hit on the 9 was unavoidable even with draw, then I would have used low-outside to play 1 rail shape off of the 9, or, since we're already in low % territory, just rolled the cheese as PROG8R suggested.

Good luck!

No, running english would have been left english, not right. Running english is the opposite side of what way you are cutting an object ball. Inside english is on the same side as the direction you are cutting a ball.

Also, inside english had to be used on the 3 to the cue ball to go to the left of the 9, and go 2 rails back down towards the 4 for shape in the side pocket. (you might have had to cue a little low to pull cue ball left a little more to insure missing the 9 ball).

A cue ball can be drawn away at a greater angle from an object ball with inside english than with running english. This is something many new and intermediate players do not know, and the proverbial test is a fairly thin cut of a ball into the side pocket and draw it back with both types of english. I, forever, see players scratching in the corner trying to use running low english on the shot, when low inside english would pull the cue
ball back and keep from scratching. For intermidiate players, not knowing what inside english can do for them is a big weakness in their game.

And as far as going for the 10 ball, if there were 3 players, and it was for a $1 maybe, but if all the other players are runout artists .... NO-Way. I was playing a 10 ball ring game last weekend with 4 other players, good ones, for $5 on the 5 and $10 on the 10. Now, if I go for the 10 and miss, that is a $75 dollar swing for me as opposed to running out ..... See my point?

Yes it was carom for shape. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I am sick and not getting much sleep. So anyways. When you say low outside for one rail shape...you mean the bottom long rail and back up for the 4 in the side? And thanks for all your help guys.

Well, that may be an option, depending on how fully you contact the 9, but I was actually thinking straight across for the 4 up in the corner. Really, when talking about playing shape off of a carom, you have to practically split hairs when it comes to the precise location of the 9-ball, and, frankly, I'm not even sure if it's possible to really do these situations justice with the WEI table. Don't get me wrong, the WEI table is an awesome tool, but for some things you really just need to see that actual table layout.

If I were to try to come up with a general rule for what I believe to be the best strategy here, I guess it would be this: I don't want to carom off of the 9 unless I have to; if I have to carom off of the 9, then I'd like to do it in a way that sends my cb away from all of that trafic at the foot of the table. The worst thing that can happen is that you get hooked on the 4, and, due to the inherent inaccuracy in a carom-for-position shot, that area at the foot of the table must be viewed as a large danger zone. That's why I would be inclined to bring the cb uptable, if possible. The 4-ball realistically has 5 pockets it can go in, so the important thing, IMHO, is to just not get hooked.

Good luck!

Running/reverse english is always in respect to the rail you are looking at(and where the cb is going). Just think of it as adding or subtracting energy. If you put spin on the ball so as to make it go more in the direction it is already going it is adding energy, so it is running english. If you put spin which makes the ball want to go the opposite way of which it is already going then you subtract energy, hence reverse english. So what you say is not necessarily true.... If you put low right hand spin on a ball straight into a corner pocket and draw to the long rail then that is running. You sound like you are a knowledgeable player...so you know the ball speeds up off that rail. Also, you have basically changed the angle of the cut(the 9 ball is now the ball which you are "cutting", since you caromed into it) and right spin is now running. If you don't believe that then you just don't want to believe it.
