I want to know more about Rings?

There are some that are 'painted', some that
are made, etc.. I want to know more about
which ones have the 'color' or 'design' all the way
through vs. just a 'surface coating'.

What is done when a player scratches or a small
scar on his rings for repair?

rings are wafers that are stacked or sandwiched.

like think of a stack of poker chips

I beleive that only the very cheapist of imported cues are made in this way. Almost all deco-rings are made of combinations of rings where the color is solid, not just painted on.

Maybe my wording isn't right. I mean the dashed rings
(on most cues) right beside the joint and on the butt sleeve.
I have also seen phenolic colored rings, wood rings, and
other assorted types used. That's what I want to know
more about.

I cut my own phenolic and wood trim rings.
Fiber rings in black or white are readily available from Atlas.
They are much softer that phenolic.
Plastic trims are also sold by Atlas but they are really soft and tend to portrude when compressed.
Some use acrylic or some synthetic trims.
I'm not too crazy about soft materials in the joint area.
I would only use phenolic or metal rings up there.

Cue Crazy,
Where do you get your billet material?

Alan

The billet I made Myself, but If you are refering to the strips that went into It- The ones in the pics I bought from someone else that had already cut them into strips, but you can use any flat material provided It's of equal & even thickness. I cut them from sheet material also, and some of that stuff can be purchased from atlas or such type places. If you wanted to use wood, then even you have to find some the thickness you need, or plain/sand them to a uniform thickness somehow. Greg

Speaking of quality cues only, not the Taiwan imports with decals for inlays, the dashes are machined in the base material sort of like a gear. Then the contrasting material is glued into the slots before it's turned down. They should be deep enough that they wont scratch off.

just more hot air!
