RIP Dan Walton "Waldo"

Wow, this is sad,,,,I played partners in north Vernon against him MANY MANY Monday nights for many years. Me and Barbox wheelchair Charlie versus him and Dennis. At the ole Silverdollar. Once it closed it was all you could drink White Russians  we also played against Dennis and Mike Minor a lot.

Great guys, played $50-$100 a game per man, nine ball alternating shot one bar tables. No coaching. I can't count how many hours we played over e years and NEVER had an argument or problem, and actually SHOOK hands win or lose. Unheard of in this day and age.

I always had fun with Waldo and those guys, and I'm sorry to hear about his passing..RIP Waldo

Great story. If only those walls could talk at the Silver Dollar!

As recent as just a couple years ago we would all go down for the weekly tournament and Waldo was always there ready to get down. He was a favorite to finish at the top of the field in just about any bar table tournament, hell any tournament for that matter.

He could play on the big box too. He could play all games solid. I played him once when I was maybe 19 a set of one pocket and we played for 20 hours or so and he outlasted me!! When I left the poolroom it was 11 or noon and when I looked back on the way out the door there was Dough (short for Waldo) hitting straight backs and cross sides. LMAO....he hadn't played long enough so he decided to practice. He was giving me a nice spot and I couldn't beat him!

Thank you for this! My family appreciates the sentiments and the memories!

We will be holding a viewing for Waldo on Friday January 17, 2014 from 2pm to 4pm with a service after at 4. It will be located at Bell Mortuary 2310 West Washington, Indianapolis, IN, 46222.

The family would love to hear your stories in person if you are able to join us.

Again Thank you

You are more than welcome. Not sure if we have ever met but I did meet your brother a couple times. Waldo would lug him around to an occasional tournament from time to time. He was a proud father I know that.

I wish I could of known I'd never see him again. I would of liked to have said goodbye and thanked him for the memories. I have some more stories, although I know they are nothing compared to some of the stories the older guys could tell. I met Waldo probably 15 years ago a short span compared to his pool career.

Here's a few pictures from Valley state a few years back(2009). Wearing his "Waldo" hat. Waldo was a joy to be around and will be missed.

RIP Mr. Dan Walton

Tammie and I will sorely miss him was a good friend as well as a pool player. I guess the 2 things that come to mind about him are:
1. He never missed a combo on the 9. Oh, I did say never right.
2. There is not a person on this planet that he has played 3 times or more and didn't have a winning record on.
Will miss you Dan!
RIP
Troy and Tammie Jones

I went to the viewing/service and there was quite a few people there and a lot of the pool players from Indy showed up. Waldo looked very good first time I had ever seen him in a suit, they had a cue and case leaning against the casket. They had a simple service where people could speak about Waldo. The first speaker was Bill Coffey a local player/room operator who Waldo had worked for many years at concrete plus later helping Bill to run a room in Florida. Bill was very eloquent and started the service off in a positive way speaking about the kind of man that Waldo was and how he carried himself in life. Then Waldo's family spoke about what a good father and family man that Waldo was and how they shared him with the pool room, the pool room got a lot of his time but he was also there for his family. His step-kids spoke about the family and how it was more than blood to Waldo and how he was a father to them for always. It was actually a very emotional service.

The pool community in Indy lost a lot with the Waldo's passing.

Nice write up Dana. I'm sorry I couldn't attend.

I'm very sorry to hear of your father's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. May he rest in piece.

My condolences, Jerry

I am saddened to hear of Waldo's passing. It sounds like he was a lot like many of us that visit AZB.
Loved by his family, and loved his family. Loved pool and made it part of his life, likely since the times of his youth.
Played well and often. And respected and well liked by all who knew him. A genuine pleasure to know.
Sorry to see you go. You will be missed but not forgotten.

Thanks Wileydog for posting pictures, a nice touch.

RIP Waldo.

Dear 1on1PoolTourneys and others who mourn Waldo--

Every time I saw Waldo practise, he practised bank shots. About six months ago I couldn't stand it any more. I said to him, "Waldo, how come you practise only bank shots?" He said to me, "Because I don't expect my opponent to ever leave me a straight in."

That sounds like him! Always hitting them straight backs with his mitten on his bridge hand!

Reading about Greg and the Silver Dollar Monday tournaments sure brings back memories.... Those were the days....

RIP Waldo, Regretfully it's been too long since we've ran into each other....
