Ronnie Alcano a bit weird?

I'm not going to knock him as a player, but I will say that Alcano is x-files. By x-files I mean that If I ran into him in a dark room, I would turn my head and cry out: "Scully?, ...Scully!?" I think you get the idea

Pistol Pete,
Do you know if Ronnie and Efren are friends? Which of the Filipino players are friends with each other? Ive always been curious. It seems like Efren and Francisco are pretty close. I never hear of Luat or Alcano or Lee Vancorteeza or andam or ever paling around with other players. Do you know if they do and who is in with who? do they get along well with each other? sorry for so many questins, Im just real curious about these guys.
Thank you
Well I wouldn't be dying to know about that stuff but I did hear an interesting story about how Efren will give a guy (fellow filipino) the silent treatment if you beat him in a big match. I think it was Manalo who was the recipient in the case I heard about. Not like long-term grudge, i think they were fine after a couple weeks. Sounds like something my grandma would do lol.

Friends or not......

Efren is good friends with all the Filipino players. But they all have thier own little circle of friends. Yeah Django and Bata are GREAT friends. Ronnie I wouldnt say is great friends with Efren, he more or less tags along with Efren when they are at the same tournament. As for the others, like I said they are all good with eachother but its not like best of friends type of deal.

Both Ronnie and I are from the same province of Laguna Calamba in Rizal. We play at the same pool hall ( The Calamba Pool Zone ). Ive talked to him numerous times and first off I dont care what Filipino you talk to, they ALL understand english perfectly well, as far as responding in perfect English, they are very shy becasue they do not want to say somthing that wont make sense to us. But the teeth rumor is NOT a rumor at all. Ronnie didnt have great teeth growing up and eventually had to get them pulled due to rot and decay. His reference to getting his teeth pulled to emulate Bata is true, he does in fact say that, but thats not why he did it.

I will have to confirm this one. Most of the teeth were decaying, so he had them pulled off. There were few good ones left, but decided to go for the "Efren" look and had them pulled off altogether. I had dentures made for him few years back, but he seldom wears it. He said he is more comfortable playing without the dentures.
As for the case of his daughter against him, it was already dismissed late last year. His daughter is back to his house again. We decided not to make a headline out of the dismissal because Ronnie does not want his daughter to be placed in bad light.
He can understand english alright, but is having difficulty articulating his responses. Add the fact that he could be extremely shy when interviewed. In the Philippines, fluency in english= literacy. So players like Ronnie who barely finished elementary education, are most of the time, insecure when they speak in english. In school, you tend to be ridiculed if you don't answer your teacher in "good english". It's like it's tantamount to being "slow'...
I hope I was able to enlighten some readers on why Ronnie, or a lot of Filipino players are having difficulty articulating their responses. And yes, I'd go for an interpreter, that way, they are able to express their responses in a better way.
As for Ronnie's eccentricities...well, I will have to attribute that to his talent, maybe. A lot of people with extra ordinary talent or ability are also weird, right? Maybe they have a different way of perceiving things...this is just my own personal opinion based on my own personal observations.

Virginia,
Thanks for a very interesting and insightful read. I think I understand clearly now why they seem so shy and reserved. I have lots of favorite players among the Filipino players as well as the Taiwanese players. All of them conduct themselves as quiet professionals. They all seem to have "quiet" personalities and they seem very likeable as people.

Thanks again for a great post.
