Up 3-0 on Ding in the semis, Ronnie lays down the most perfect safety in the 4th frame, landing the white on top of the brown deep in balk. With most of the reds on the table early in the rack, the yellow and green sitting just so, and the blue in its center position , I don’t think Ding could have hit any red... any red at all.. with ten tries. After two really spectacular tries, I mean spectacular attempts, it even looked like there might not be any way he could have hit a red. He needed to hit softly enough to massé the kick shot to miss the blue, but hard enough to reach the only realistic red available.

Instead of just letting Ding try and try and collect 4pts per whiff, Ronnie decided that was good enough and took the shot. And he played safe instead of taking on a red! He already had the best safe, so resetting on top of the brown would have been the best play, but he decided to play safe and allow Ding to actually play a safety on a red back. Total sportsmanship right there. He could have demoralized Ding even more, but he let him in every way get back to the table to at least shoot at something.

It’s recorded now I assume, since they’re on the first intermission, so those on Facebook, it’s frame 4. Ronnie has shown a fondness for Ding in the past, and I he’s done it again.

ding just botched a 147 (with a presumably high cashout)

very nice crowd this year. the masters crowd is usually quite raucous and not so polite towards non-english players, most notably against scottish and welsh players. this has traditionally been allowed because of the tourneys non-ranking status

So how many try’s do you get before you lose 4 points and does the incoming player have to play the ball from where it last ends up?

Every time you try and miss, your opponent gets 4 points. I believe if you try and miss, but hit another color, then your opponent gets that ball's value. So you kick at a red, miss and hit the black. Your opponent would get 7. Not 100% on that rule though.

Every time you miss, your opponent has the option of taking the shot from where the CB lies, or making you shoot again.

I’ve watched snooker pros reshoot four or five times at “simple” one rail kicks. So there’s no 3-and-done type of rule as far as I know.

Ronnie has lost focus and dropped his gear from stellar to vulnerable.

Freddie <~~~ would like to play that vulnerable

that is correct, if you hit a colored ball by mistake, the foul score will be the value of that ball if it's value is above 4 points.

if you try to get out of a snooker and misses but ends up snookering the opponent from seeing any red ball, opponent gets free ball (i.e. shooting a colored ball counting as a red).

ronnie is winning this it seems

three foul rule is applied if the shooter trying to get out of a half-snooker where he has a visible red tries to hit a "safer" red without success three times. ref warns after two tries, implying the shooter should go for the visible red. ding lost a frame thursday in this way, but it's not common.

Thanks! Good to know.

Ronnie’s safe didn’t allow a single visible red. And there were almost all of them on the table!

Every time you make a foul and the ref calls a "miss" your opponent takes 4 points (or more if you hits the blue, pink or black) and he has the option to play on, make you play from where the white ended up or reset the table and make you shoot again.

If he gets so many points that there aren't enough on the table for you to win, then the ref will NOT call a miss and your opponent won't have the option to put you back in.

Correct, but if all 15 reds are on the table, you'd have to foul your way to 147 points behind. I'm guessing Ronnie didn't want to sit through that.

It was "just" the 10k pounds for the highest break of the tournament; no special 147 prize in this event. Still a nice chunk of additional change, especially by pool standards.

by pool standards yes.. by snooker standards and Ronnie it’s chump change lol They actually get paid handsomely for thier talents

Just watched that frame 4. Yep kudos to Ronnie. The miss rule can be very harsh and he was simply keeping the game honest. The ref should have done it for him though but hey ho.
