Ronnie O’Sullivan on growing up with jailed parents

Snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan spoke to 5 live about how he grew up with his parents in jail, and how he managed to succeed despite the circumstances.

He said: “It’s a hard thing to say, but you have to cut off. The moment I started being a little more selfish I started to feel the pressure releasing from me.”

O’Sullivan overcame problems with alcohol in his early 20’s, and now has 28 ranking event wins and 5 world championships to his name. He has recently turned his hand to writing, penning his first crime novel - ‘Framed’.

“I was always determined – it held me back for six or seven years and I kind of lost myself a bit. The voice of my Dad in the back of my head saying I was going to be a champion one day made me sort myself out,” added the snooker ace.

Ronnie O'Sullivan was also on The Alan Brazil Talksports Radio Show for an interview .
The pressure of plugging his book on the run up to Christmas . Pretty sure his book called Running got released around this time.....

Sounds like Ronnie didn't have much of a child hood with regard to doing things most kids do. I find that kind of sad, though we wouldn't have the Rocket unless it would have happened that way I guess. Life is strange sometimes.

Well, truth is aren't all the greats a result of a misspent youth in the halls?

With Ronnie losing two recent finals, it will be interesting to see how he pulls up for the Masters. The form player, Selby with three wins this season is dominating. Being Number 1 and earning possible £1m over two seasons (first time ever) just shows his consistency on tour. Ronnie seems close to his best (at times), but he's just lacking his usual fire power!

I listened to the interview and I really like this guy. He made no excuses and told it like it was. I have a lot of respect for a guy that admits his mistakes and doesn't try to dream up excuses as to why he lost. I admire that quite a lot.
