Router Question ??

I was cleaning out my fathers shop a couple of weeks ago and came across a neat device for the lathe. I think its a die grinder holder. It mounts to the compound just like a tool post would. I believe its for the grinder in the second picture (I do not own one yet). My question is can they use router bits safely and would it work for tapering?

It looks similar to a router collet setup but I am not sure.

The die grinder specs are: Accepts 1/4" shank tooling 24,000 RPM 1/5 HP

Looks like it was a cheaper vervion of a tool post grinder. It would be great for cutting threads with live tooling if the spindle didn't run out too much.

For tapering?
Too weak for that.
Good for cutting threads, polishing and slit saws.
