Rule question: 9-ball or 10-ball

Player A tries to pocket a ball and misses, but leaves it hanging in the pocket.

Player B gets up to shoot and before he/she has a chance to shoot the object ball falls into the pocket of its own accord.

What is the proper course of action?
 
It all depends on how big your opponent is.

Take your chances and let him win if you think he can whoop you straight up.

Otherwise, OB spots back to original position and player B shoots.

What I've heard is after 5 seconds if the ball falls it is places exactly where it was (hanging in the pocket). It's as if nothing happened. I can see where if it was close to 5 seconds there can be some arguments there but IDK if that's even the rule.
 
The problem is

that noone counts off the 5 seconds, they both just 'guess' whether it was 5 seconds or not.

This was just asked in another thread. It is covered in the rules. Here's the specific rule:

8.3 Ball Pocketed
A ball is pocketed if it comes to rest in a pocket below the playing surface or enters the ball return system. A ball near the brink of a pocket partly supported by another ball is considered pocketed if removal of the supporting ball would cause the ball to fall into the pocket.
If a ball stops near the edge of a pocket, and remains apparently motionless for five seconds, it is not considered pocketed if it later falls into the pocket by itself. See 1.7 Balls Settling for other details. During that five second period, the referee should ensure that no other shot is taken.​
Rule 1.7 goes on to say that the ball is replaced.

If you know the rule, there is nothing to keep you from counting audibly to five while you're holding off your opponent from taking a shot.

Now all we need is to have every one use this standard...:)
