Hey,

I had a situation the other night, where using my playing shaft without butt was the best option.

Is that legal ?

Assuming it was a issue with some immovable object I doubt anybody would take issue with it, but technically it's not legal.

One of the bars I shoot at has a Big Buck Hunter Game that is sometimes in the way and I have seen guys use just the shaft, but that's just league play.

The equipment specifications for both the WPA (world-standardized rules) and CSI (BCAPL/USAPL) specify a minimum cue length of 40 inches. Neither set of rules/specs has a maximum on the length.

I know of a poolroom owner that intentionally located the 3 cushion table 57" from the wall on the short rail side of a 5 x 10. That was so a bar box could be put nearby that nobody ever played on. "Thump thump thump" on an office door was heard constantly. The owner would come over in a rage and grab all 3 balls and storm away. The crap you have to tolerate sometimes as a paying customer.
I'd never call a foul if someone used a short stick.

Nope

I thought the 40" rule was for jump cues?

17. CUE STICKS
Cue Sticks used at WPA competitions should comply with the following
during play at table:

Length of Cue: 40 inches [1.016 m] minimum / No Maximum
Weight of Cue: No minimum / 25 oz. [708.75 gm] maximum
Width of Tip: No minimum / 14mm maximum

The cue tip may not be of a material that can scratch or damage the addressed ball. The cue tip on any stick must be composed of a piece of specially processed leather or other fibrous or pliable material that extends the natural line of the shaft end of the cue and contacts the cue ball when the shot is executed..

The ferrule of the cue stick, if of a metal material, may not be more than 1 inch [2.54 cm] in length.

Hmm. Should have been fine. My 3C cue is 55.5” long. If I’m stuck on the rail, the only way I’d hit the wall is if I’m playing straight across the table, and taking a pretty big backswing....
