Rule:

Stiff penalty

A little bar tournament in Santa Ana (CA) had a rule stating you couldn't play an intentional safe - the old play-to-hit rule. A new guy came in, apparently unfamiliar with the house rules because in one game he shot a wonderful safety and was ejected from the tournament for unsportsmanlike conduct!! How's that for enforcing the rules???

discretion call

I agree and disagree with Bob here. If I were the TD and this siutuation came up, I would rule that once Player A had taken the next shot, it became "his" turn at the table and the match should proceed from that point on. If I believed that this was a "move" by Player B to get BIH, I would warn him that if anything like this happens again, he would lose the match he was playing.

In my opinion this is clearly a discretion call. and Jay's assessment summarized it perfectly. Not to beat your drum, but after reading your many post on various subjects it's obvious to me that you have an over abundance of common sense, not to mention experience and knowledge, particularly about the subject matter, which qualifies you as one of the best,if not the best TD out there.

That's a WOW!

WOW!
I haven't had the opportunity to play in any tournaments where Jay was officiating but like you I have come to appreciate the surgical manner in which he gets to the crux of the pool matter whether it is a ruling, an ethics question or how he narrates a choice pool story.

Jay Helfert's upcoming book should be a big success. The publishing date may have to be extended due to the fact that it looks like he is currently adding another Chapter as we post. :D

OK, but that counts for NONE. Thanks for your candor.

Has ANYONE ever seen a person ejected by a tournament director? What were the circumstances?

And please don't give me the instance where a team or a league player was banned for sandbagging. I know about those prejudicial instances.

HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN A PLAYER EJECTED FROM A TOURNAMENT FOR UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT?

I kicked a well-known player out of a tournament I was the TD for one time. The format was "split the quarters" and he was bullying everyone into playing "loser pays". He tried to do it to me and I told him "no, it's split the quarters". He got abusive and I talked to the owner of the bar and sponsor of the tourney, he said "Give him his f***ing money back and tell him to get the (heck) out. I'm tired of his BS he does this every tournament." So I gave him his money back and kicked him out.

Well I'm sure no one has ever been ejected from a tournament for unsportsmanlike conduct in LOUISIANA!:D ...
Related to which, Wikipedia has a great quote from Edwin Edwards about what it would take for him not to be reelected in 1983.

I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE PERSON KICKED OUT OF A POOL TOURNAMENT, although I am just a babe by most standards.

Thanks,
JoeyA

I saw a jerk get kicked out of a tournament. He was engaging in blatant, continual sharking, and ended up winning a match. When the person who lost the match talked to the TD about it, the jerk came over and unloaded a really bada$$ attitude on the TD, who then really got ticked off at the jerk. TD gave him his money back and bid him farewell.

Oh happy days !!:D

Well, I went to grade school for 11 years in New Orleans and I be smart enough to know that you didn't mention '1983' OR "dead girl" in your previous post:

I once saw a real great and very friendly player kicked out of a local Sunday night handicapped tournament in Charlotte NC about 15 years ago. Best I can remember it was a young Shane McMinn who walked in to a ten buck tourney and asked to play the TD says what rank are you, he said what are these guys practicing here ranked? The TD says there good there sevens and he said make me a twelve so TD says ok. He beats the first two players who were sevens 9 to 0 in 9 to 5 races of eight ball and the TD gives him $10 back and says you can't play I'm sorry. I was mad because he would have played the TD's son a under ranked seven next and kept him from splitting the finals again. By the way someone in the room knew who he was and had ratted him out to TD, after the player tried to be honest by playing as a twelve.
