Hi,

I like to play different games. I remember a website that had rules to all kinds of pool games besides the usual stuff. It was mentioned here in some old thread but I can't find it any more. Someone have a link?

Apart from that: I read about Straight Pool being played differently in the early days. It wasn't 14.1 back then but the whole rack was set up again. Does somebody know the rules to this old game or is there a website for those someplace? I think I remember that the website mentioned above did not have those rules.

Thanks for any help in advance.

From what I remember reading on this subject ,and there are others on here who can give you more information quicker than I can off the top of my head, in some of the earliest games players were given the point value of the ball (similar to rotation) later this was changed to just 1 point per ball like 14.1 is today. This is the game I believe you are referring to. It's basic rules I think were like straight pool, playing to a set number of points (I don't know all of the nuances and even 14.1 rules have had a few tweaks over the years). All 15 balls were shot and then all 15 were re-racked and the shooter continued but the break was generally defensive. Jerome Keough came up with 14.1 continuous in I think 1910? so that with only shooting 14 balls and leaving the 15th to pocket and break up the rack, the runs would be longer and the break a much more offensive aspect of the game. Line up straight pool is I think the version Inaction is talking is a popular version since shooting the ball along the spot line after they have been pocketed is a bit easier than manipulating a break shot and was/is a lot of fun.

If you are referring to 14.1's precursor game Continuous Pool, it's a pretty simple game. You are allowed an open break and any ball on the break counts towards your score. You simply pot as many balls as you can and you don't need to worry about break balls or leaving your cue ball in any particular position. If you pot the last ball on the table, you break in the next rack.

Although players initially broke with a hard break, they began tending towards safety breaks instead since failing to make a ball on the break would be punished pretty severely. Hard breaks became more standard for exhibitions.

This one sounds like the one I heard of earlier. I just didn't know if it was call pocket/ball which would require a safety break or not.

The site with all the odd games I remember mentioned here included AFAIR games like Kelly Pool (pea pool), Golf and a multitude of other games like Cutthroat etc. It was a pretty comprehensive website I just can't find any more.

I do like games like Kelly Pool, Poker Pool, 3-ball and would like to explore a few other forgotten games.

Some greenies went your way - thank you all.

It's call ball and pocket except on the break. For fun, you can play the earliest version of the game which is 61 pool. Essentially it's rotation but without playing the balls in order. I remember playing this with a friend and we would be putting together decent packages because so long as you made a ball on the break, running out was easy.

The two sites that lead to various pool rules seem to have gone by the wayside. One of them was called Sharky’s. The other was some name play of Billiards ( Billy Ayard’s Rules of Billiard Games?).

Other rules of games like Continuous Pool and Line Up are in the BCA Rulebook (not to be confused with BCAPL or CSI rules) . Get a copy. You’ll like it.

Bob Jewett’s Pool & Billiard FAQ has some game rules.

I have to believe Dr Dave has links. He’s good like that.
