Run This (18)

3, 8, 7, 5, 2, 4, 6.

Shoot the 3, get an angle on the 8 to go one rail for the 7 (if you happen to completely botch that, you still have the 2 and then you can reroute your pattern), follow down for the 5, getting an angle above it so that you can just naturally come off the rail straight back toward the 2, then the 4 in the lower, right-hand corner, then key off the 6.

I'm sure there are tons of ways to get out from here, but I'd like to get that 8 out of the way as soon as possible, so that's why I selected this route.

Yeah, I'm not too thrilled with this type of pattern. Those 3 balls there with the 8 blocking the pocket really bothers me. But this is actually a perfect example of something that happens a lot in straight pool. The last 3 or 4 shots of the pattern I diagrammed are going to take pin point precision on the position play. In no way am I say saying this is an easy out. More often than not I'm going to screw up the position to that 6 ball. I prefer to leave the 3 for the key ball but coming off of the 6 will work too if you have the accuracy.

Ok, so I start out with a masse shot on the 8 and control the cue ball enough to stop where I want it. After that I bank the 7 off of the 3 into the upper corner pocket. Then I lay off the fireworks for a second and cut the 2 into the upper corner. After that I do a 2 cushion bank into the lower corner.....because after the masse and bank kiss in I gotta do something with some flare. After that I ease up again, so I don't scare my opponent too much, and cut the 3 into the lower corner pocket and swing the cue ball out one rail for perfect position on the 1. I follow that down just a tad and then cut the 5 in with high inside and swing around 3 cushions for perfect position on the break.

after the match there are 3 big burly men holding straight jackets waiting for me outside the pool hall

Sorry, I'm not trying to make a mockery of this. I just had some free time and I got a chuckle out of the masse shot and just ran with it. I honestly love these "Run This" threads. I hope everyone gets a laugh out of this as it was intended.

Here's another option. You have to know where you want to be on the 3 so that the follow shot is a natural angle to the 1. If you don't get right on the 1 you might hit the 8 or the 5 and then the 8. If you play good position on the 3 on your first shot (the 2 ball), the rest of the position plays are pretty routine.

Mully, I laughed.
As for my run, I usually do my runs right after I post the layout for you all and post it after you've gotten chances at it. The following is my run I did earlier. It's EXACTLY Marop's run, except for slight position choices. I must be getting better at this, since Marop is now becoming a big runner to emulate. Jimmy M's is just one ball different.

After looking at this again, I think I might like your pattern a little more. It's easy to get out of line and end up with a touchy shot when you key off of a ball that's right next to your break ball, especially when you don't have something that leads to it just perfectly. With your route, it's kind of hard to screw up those last three balls if you get reasonably well on the 2.

I think the biggest problem with this type of run is all the CD movement, but it's kind of unavoidable. I really hate that 8 ball sitting there like that. No matter which way you go it's gotta be done at the right time with good position. A butt hair off here or there and that 6 or 1 snookers you. You also run into scratching into that far corner pocket, past the 5 ball, if you go for the 8 in the corner but over run the position a little. And even if you do get good position that side pocket above the 7 becomes as big as a bucket when you swing over that way. Again, I really dislike this type of pattern but something like this should be practiced because it comes up A LOT.

still think opening with the masse was a good choice
