I was hill/hill with this layout for guaranteed 2nd place in a small 11 man tournament last night. I didn't feel comfortable playing the 7 in the upper side and going around the table. I tried the diagrammed shot and missed.

I won $20 for 3rd place.

That cut you layed out looks like an easy one. Cutting the ball might give you a better chance of catching a good roll given that you would have to hit it with some speed to get around the table...... I always say never bank if you don't have to......................

If I could shoot it over I would go 3 rails around the table. The pockets were tight but not THAT tight. I was a very makable cut.
 
i agree with the 3 rail shot for the 8-Ball here. Hal, you need to think about me and my woes more when facing these shots.

anywhere down table where you can get to the PROPER SIDE for the 8-Ball is the way to go. no matter where it would be on that side of the table, that would have been where you wanted to get to.

and i agree - dont bank unless its pretty much necessary.

Well, my friend, I think you must have been absolutely insane at that moment to not shoot the 7-ball in the upper side pocket. Unless the balls didn't exactly lay like you diagrammed.

Yeah you're right Fred. I didn't have much angle but I had enough. I should have shot it differently.
 
it's not that i havn't tried and don't like your shot on the 7 but if it's hill hill i just try to synch balls and play safe if i'm even unsure
 
It is easier to draw a shot than to shoot it :)

However, here you go..

Page 1 for 3 cushion route: (I set the line width of 7 ball to thick mode just to see how much room you have. However, we have have to be careful of the ball popping out of the pocket here)

I personally would have never tried the bank...more power to ya!!!! The cut in the side, going 3 or 4 rails is the correct shot. Unless the pockets are super tight, l mean like under 4".

If I had to play safe, I would rather bank the 7 above the 8 and 9 and leave the cue ball down against the same rail at the lower right side of the table.

i agree with both the shots as diagramd, but i think the suggestion of banking the 7 down by the 8 &9 wouldn't be as easy to do as to bank the 7 that was the side would come into play and ya might not get behind the 8&9. playing the shot to put the cue ball there you could just play the cue ball and probably get there. both a last resort. and if ya leave someone a jump shot prepare to have your heart broke. i am a firm beliver that when you hook someone, and they use a jump cue they hook ya back 85% of the time.
