(S&D) Safety & Defense - The Confusion Safety Type

The eight ball strategies are nothing new. All of those are used regularly as needed.

Seems to me most of the nine ball stuff is kind of like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. You think you're making it look better but bottom line is you are on a boat that is sinking. But if you are already hooked then yes, desperate measures may be called for to do something to make it more difficult since you will likely be giving up ball in hand. For me the primary purpose to play a safety in nine ball is to hook the opponent. At that point you're already trying to control one if not two balls. The push-out is the other exception. There you may be trying to complicate the layout for your opponent.

Nonetheless, interesting stuff to be reminded about. Thanks for the link. ;)

There is a time for safeties. A good player will tear you up if you just concentrate on these safeties. As a matter of fact a good player will out safe you while you are busy playing tiddly winks with the object balls. Sounds like the OP is playing not to lose rather than playing to win if that is the way OP plays.

Safety play

Howdy Folks -

People talk about safeties and defensive tactics.

Here's a VERY helpful safety type to use when you want to torture your opponent.

Good luck - shoot straight!!

I teach fifteen basic varieties of defensive shots. As I began organizing and playing in 8-ball leagues in 1966, 8-ball has been my "specialty".

An early step in learning safety play is that offense and defense are generally not separate strategies. As one develops their game they see more offense/defense shots. This is where imagination (one of the four cornerstones of great play) comes in...and imagination is not taught, but can be cultivated with help from a good instructor.
