Safer ring cutter

I just got the mini grinder set up with a toe kick blade. Works great. Has enough smoke to pull a 5/32 blade through Bubinga on auto feed. I have slitting saws coming tomorrow .020 and .032" thickness. 3" dia. the grinder spins at 3450 rpm. Blades are rated at 5000 rpm. As soon as I get it set up on the lathe I will post some pics.

Hey Lee, It would be appreciated if you would reduce the size of your logo so that many of us don't have to scroll across the pages to read every line of each post. It would be nice to just scroll down the page. Thanks in advance, Ray

Yea!

rocket, have you ever tried any of these ? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93371

I use them with the cheap die grinders from the same place. (the rear exhaust kind). 18 to 22k rpm, can adjust that with air pressure decrease, but lose some torque with the pressure turned down......

still experimenting............ j
I have not. But I can't see whay that wouldn't work.. Die grinders have a tendancy to use a bunch of air. If you have a big compressor your set. I tried the pencil grinder and a little diamond wheel. I have a 1/10 horse motor from Grainger that works pretty good. I need to get some bugs worked out of it through. Set up is a pain. Once I get it set I will be fine, but til then smokin burnin. Might try the solid carbide saw and see.. I need something that is small dia. like 3 to 4" and has a thin kerf but enough releif to keep the blade from dragging... Still looking. the 1/10 works real good plenty of power.

I have solid carbide blades for sale if anyone is interested. Super sharp, no flex and .035 kerf. PM for more info & pics.

Hey Lee, I just went to your site and noticed that you are selling "Morris Taper" spur centers on the front page ... I think that should read "Morse Taper".

Hey, taking posts out of context for humourous purposes is my schtick bucko, we'll have no more from you today, OK  But feel free to post with 10 dots as the text, many of us enjoy your avatar :D

Dave, an "anal retentive" type person who is also an Engineer and tries to be very precise in his posts but trips over his own fingers now and then :o

PS : a fellow in Edmonton Canada (OK, Leduc Canada, but what's 20 miles between friends) has been selling new slitting saws for cheap, and it looks like he has one batch left :

I got a few of KJ's carbide blades & must say that they work great! I've been using a 2" diameter HSS blade that is .040" thick which works fine but it can't compare to these carbide blades. They are much more solid due to the carbide body and the stiffness inherent in the smaller diameter. This despite the thinner body. A wise investment for anyone in the market. Attached pic shows a simple arbor that works very well.

Bob,
I have something similar on an 8000 rpm motor. I made the arbor... The one I bought wobbled like a punch-a-clown. It is now all set up and I have to get a couple of pictures out there.. The blades I am using now are from micro mark for their mini table saw. They seem to work great. Sooner or later I will probably go to carbide but I want to see how long it is going to take to wear one of these out first.

Anyone ever use a toolpost grinder? I have a dumore that is relatively small and is very high precision. I am still using a custom parting tool and it works great on everything but I have never tried to make .005 rings with it. Just a thought. Chris.

Aren't most tool post gringers are super fast 20,000 not sure. Can't se why that wouldn't work. This thing spins at 8000 rpm. I can get a motor that spins at 5000. But I don't see the need.
