Sandpaper for cleaning shaft?

Hi!
I am using a sandpaper everytime I clean my shaft. I use 600 and 800 paper, is this to much? I feel that the shaft is a little bit smaller after I have done it, but when I measuring the perimeter its always the same.

First i use the 600/800 sandpaper until most of the chalk is gone, then i use som creamy stuff for removing the rest of the chalk/dirt, then i use som polish for making the shaft smooth.

What do you use? Any better tips for cleaning?

I just wipe mine down with a cotton cloth, usually an old t shirt, some people swear by the Magic Eraser, you can get one at Walmart, get it wet and ring it out very well so its barely damp and then just wipe the shaft with it.

You can also buy some products specifically made for this, whatever you do stop using sand paper, when your car is dirty do you wash it or sand the dirt off the paint until it looks clean?
