Sang Lee international (carom tournament)

I was just wondering if anyone was going to the Sang Lee international tournament held at the Carom Cafe in New York. It should be an awesome tournament with the best of the best like Blomdhal, Sayginer, Jaspers, Caudron and others. I will be there from thursday to sunday, exhibiting my new line of carom cues. But the first qualifications actually started yesterday. It should be a nice event for those who like 3 cushion billiards.

Hi

I would be there during week nights and the whole weekends, showing people the software and record some matches.

If you have any questions about travelling from Montreal or anything else about New York, please feel free drop me a pm. I have driven to/from Montreal a few times. It has to be my fav city to go to.

Actually I will be coming in from the 87, but I don't know exactly how to get there , I'm not too familiar with the New York area. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you

new york is such a lovely city

and the location of carom is in a promising area of great development.

Here most highways are referred to by names and if the 87 leads you to the New York State Thruway coming in from over the Throngs Neck through brooklyn into queens will save you on traffic. But you totally miss out on the scenic skyline by avoiding the Queenboro Bridge.

IN comparison to other nyc pool halls carom is in a very diverse neighborhood with bad lighting. No it is not a bad place just smile at everyone.

Avoid Rush hours and i would try to hop off 87 around Yonkers and jump on the Cross County East to the Hutchinson Riv Pkwy South and take that to (over) the Whtestone Bridge- Doing anything else and you will either be on the Cross Bronx Expressway [95] (Misnomer if there ever was one) or risk Yankee Stadium and or Manhattan traffic using the Tri Boro Bridge.

Stay to the right before you get over the Whitestone Bridge and stay there after and it should be maybe 2 exits (3/4 mile or so)after the Bridge- Exit name is Linden- Carom is on Linden. You will take a left under the highway and Carom is maybe 1/4 mile up on your right. If u get to a real real real busy road (Northern Blvd) you went too far.

Check these out with Mapquest to be sure.

The only thing else is just to make sure when u get near the Tappan Zee Bridge on 87 or about 30 miles from Manhattan- start listening to 88AM or 1130 AM and they have traffic reports on the 8's and on the 1's respectively (Time 12:01, 12:11, 12:21 etc). There is a one in 10 chance of major problems at any of the Bridges. Your first choice s/b Whitestone, 2nd-TRi Boro 3rd- Throgs Neck (which doesnt come or start anywhere near Brooklyn)

You are gonna need a real city person for that one. Im from the Burbs and drive where i want to go.

But having said that, i will tell you that it is probably a $40 taxi ride. The Subway is proably the best bet but i have no idea how to do it. I just saw their site it says take the 7 Train to Main St and walk. That woiuld be no help to me. Im sure you cant get the 7 Train any old place.

real new yorkers can navigate the roads and the rails.

Out of towners should stick to LIRR from Penn to Main street[Port Washington Line] be sure to tell the clerk at penn I said hello.

and find carom which is a 5 min bus ride from the station but there lots of buses to choose from on main. Just bag a cab from main. theres like 5 pool halls in the area.

If you like asian food{its a treat} be very careful on main because theres lots of places to choose from but only a few quality joints.

Hi Thierry:

Here is an easier way to go, I assume you are staying around the area.

On your way down 87, take 95 east (that section of 95 is called Cross Bronx Parkway) for 15 min for 678 South / Whitestone bridge, cross the bridge and stay on 678 for 2 exits until you see Linden Place exit on the right side (exit 14). Once you exit, stay on the service road until the traffic light. The road at the light is Linden Place. Make a left onto Linden Place and go pass 2 sets of lights. Carom Cafe will be on your right. There is a parking lot to the room but it might be crowded. You can stop there and ask for advises on what to do.

This way you won't have to deal with Triboro bridge, La Guardia traffic and Grand Central Parkway confusion. Please take a look at the map attached

btw, remember to stop at the border duty free shop on the Canada side, it's got the best price anywhere. (kiss SAQ goodbye)

from Penn Station

Hi Mike:

From Pennstation take subway 1 or 9 north one stop to 42 street / Time Square, transfer to 7 train, take 7 train all the way to the end (Main street station). The train takes about 30 min if you can get on the express train From Main station it's about 10 min walk.

Main street station is located at the intersection between Main st and Roosevelt ave. Walk on main st north to Northern Blvd, take a right, walk to Linden Place and take a left (there is a Mobil station at the corner). Walk another 3-5 min and you are there

See attached map (you might want to print it out) :)

depending where you are from can determine how much the locals will charge you for walking through their neighborhood.

Even in big towns foreignors are easy to spot.

Wei- I was keeping him OFF the Cross Bronx and on the Whitestone too. That is a very poor idea compared to my Cross County/Hutch route. I live North of the City and believe me, i would never send an out of towner on the Cross Bronx or myself for that matter. The Cross Bronx is never a good idea to attempt unless the Pope has told you it is empty.

BTW- Just 2 weeks ago, it had to be closed because a Tomahawk Missle was on the Roadway- It fell off a truck. The route i suggested was 2 Parkways. They dont even allow Trucks on them.

it depends on the time of day. if one goes during commuter hours I could see why. But if you plan to travel during non commercial hours then Id say go for it.

There is no right time to take the Cross Bronx-It is just a truck parking lot.

BTW- I just did a mapquest and it suggests my exact route. Even it knows to stay off the Cross Bronx,

Excuse my last post :p , Dave made a good point, Hutchinson to Whitestone bridge is a even better route. Since Hutchinson Parkway doesn't really have a highway number you will want to keep eyes out for it . Basically you want to avoid Yankees Stadium and Triboro bridge.

I will tell you all the food place when I see you. The Chinese food in Montreal is pretty good, but I can show you some variations. Plus there are a few 24 hour Korean restaurants.

See attached map :)

OK I think I should get there safe now. I love chinese (the real one!) so you can tell me all about it. I'll probably be hanging around with Fred Caudron so I hope he likes chinese too.

Thanks again.

correction: Linden Place Exit on 678 is Exit 14, I have corrected the original post as well :)
