Just so you can plan your vacation this summer....

The 2007 (3rd) edition of the Sang Lee International Open is set for August 13-19. There will be three phases, as in previous years: prelims, semi-finals and finals. The finals will again have a 10-player A group and a 10-player B group. Five players will be seeded into the semi-finals:

Frederic Caudron
Torbjorn Blomdahl
Semih Sayginer
Daniel Sanchez
Raymond Ceulemans

The top 10 finishers will get at least $3000 each in prizes with $12,000 to the winner, assuming a full field of 72.

What a strong field! In addition to the seeded players, there are at least another half dozen world-class players: Aveiga, Coklu, De Backer, Forthomme, Kyung-Roul Kim, Tasdemir, and Teran all made it at least to the knock-out round of the tournament in Corfu.

My dark horse is Jae Hyung Cho. I haven't seen his name in any tournaments for the last four years or so, and I heard that he was operating his own room in Denver. A few years ago he spent several months playing regularly at Edgie's (near San Jose), and I was lucky enough to watch him and play against him many times. One day we played three 30 point games. In the first game he ran a 6 and a 7; in the second game a 6 and an 8; and the third game a 6 and two 8s. He averaged well over 2 for those three games. I'm glad to see him back in action.

I see Bart Ceulemans listed. Which generation is he in?

I wondered the same thing, but I was waiting for the legendary Bob Jewett to tell us who he is. Ceulemans is not an uncommon name in Belgium (there was a famous soccer player by that name), so he needn't be related at all. Raymond only has the two sons, I believe, Kurt and Koen, and Peter is too young to have a son old enough to play.
