Saw something curious the other week :)

Normally I am the only one playing 14.1 in the pool hall I call home. Not only am I the only one, but only a few know what I am actually playing when they walk by.

Any time I go to practice I usually go with several different drills, several racks of 14.1 and then I move on to 9 ball, 10 ball and 15 ball rotation.

Apparently I got two people hooked just by having them watch me. I looked over and saw the pattern and thought to myself *there is no way they are playing 8 ball, or one pocket*. I then got that fuzzy feeling knowing that I might just have a few converts. The next week I come in and they're at it again. They are at it the next two weeks as well.

I didn't see them today, but if I see them tomorrow I am going to reach into my pocket and pull something out that will lead to their full blown addiction. What might that be? Introducing them to pattern play. They are the two world's worst 14.1 players I have ever seen, but once I sink my meat hooks into them they will be done. The first time they actually see the pattern themselves they will be lost in 14.1 bliss, comfortably numb, chasing the dragon and lost to all other forms of pool.

Oooooh how I can't wait to see them :)

You sure that wasnt me and alstl you saw! LOL, its been a month and were stumped. Please sink your meat hooks in us and show us the patterns!!!

Very good story....and keep on spreading the gospel word its the only way our sport can grow !!!!

LoL

I will admit that I took a vacation from 14.1 for several months and decided to get back into it. I was absolutely lost for the first few racks and really didn't go back to automatic until the third day of grinding it back into my thick skull.

Saw something curious...

Way to go... I agree with the others when I say "thanks for getting them into the game."

I would like to share a story with you about younger players. I was at my local pool hall and was shooting some nine ball with the owner. Two younger men in their early 20's were playing straight pool next to us. Both the owner and I grew up on 14.1 and answered their questions on rules, racking, etc but were basically letting them play on their own. John Schmidt (Mr. 400 himself) owns a pool room about 30 miles away and stopped by to speak with owner and kabitz.

John sat down by our table and we bullshitted about different things. After about a 1/2 hour, John started to give the younger men some pointers on 14.1. The younger men did not know who John is but were impressed when John used one of the players cue stick and ran off a rack and one-half (ending on a break shot for the kid), talking his way through the rack, pattern play, etc. John and the pool hall owner went over to another table and were talking about something and I went to the younger men and asked them if they knew who (John) was. They did not and when I told them, one was in awe and the other did not know the class of player John Schmidt is.

The next day, one of the younger men was at the pool hall practicing 14.1. He came to me and said, "I looked up Schmidt on youtube. Dude, the man ran like 200 balls without missing!" The younger man continued, "I just ran 22! I am going to practice until I can run 50 without missing!" I told him, "Well son, I see you got bit by the same bug we all did."

Aristotle said it best when he said, "The future of any nation lies within its youth." When World Class Players take the time to share their knowledge with younger players and people such as those on this Board who promote the game and also share their enthusiasm for the game, 14.1 has a promising future. :D

i started with 14.1 (i call it straight pool) about 35 yrs ago....just got back into it after many yrs playing other games. where could i find a good source for learning more about better "pattern play"?

Same thing happened over here in Cyprus...was knocking some around in 14.1 to work on my touch and control in a crowd, not seriously trying to run anything, and the room owner came over and asked about it. He's a better player than me, already knew a little about the game, but asked me to walk him through it. Since then, I can't walk in the place without him jumping on me for a "quick" game! Now he's asking me about this thing they call "one-pocket".......

There's a Jim Rempe dvd out there How to Run a Rack.
Phil Capelle has a book on Straight Pool that is very encyclopedic. Covers everything.
Goerge Fels has some good books on pattern play.
John Schmidt has a dvd on How I run 100s.
