Schmidt and Hohmann run some balls at Derby

John never used an OB Classic shaft when he was with OB, since they didn't yet exist. he did use an OB-1 shaft, and shot one of his 400's with it.

he left OB for Fury 4-5 years ago, but continued to use the OB-1 once in a while for both straight pool and rotation, including briefly for the Mosconi Cup, iirc.

i've no idea who he's endorsing now, if anyone, but have never seen him with an OB Classic.

Thanks! The reason I said Ob Classic is I don't ever think I saw him with the laminated ferule. I think the old OB1 turned into what they're calling the Classic now, but I could be wrong. Man, professionals are funny. They change cues and brands every year or two. I've been shooting with the same two cues for almost 30 years. I guess I'd change too if someone tossed cash and equipment my way. :)

How do you like your OB? I'm thinking of upgrading to some modern equipment, and that's one of the cues I'm looking at. At least, I'm hoping it will be an upgrade. I may even get with the times and opt for no wrap.

I suspect that John wishes he had never switched from his Bobby Hunter cue.

I believe that as well. I almost bought one of his Bobby Hunter cues from him back in 2005 - at the time Bobby was making him a new one - and John was very clear when he said that he would not sell me the shafts.

I do remember that the first night that John shot with his OB1 shaft, he ran his 403.

the OB-1 has always had the maple ferrule. it still exists as the OB-1+, still with the maple ferrule. the OB Classic, now the Classic+, was a new development, not derived from the OB-1. if you saw John shooting without a maple ferrule, it was not an OB cue.

i like my OB Classic fine, and the OB-122 is imo an austerely beautiful factory cue. i personally hew to no-wrap cues, although it's really down to what you get used to, and i could definitely see me shooting with a wrap if things had gone differently (i have a belief, entirely unsupported by any evidence, that linen wraps help foster a lighter grip).

if you've been shooting with the same 2 cues for 30 years, changing to an LD shaft is unlikely to accomplish anything good.
