i'm curious to know why john wasn't in the last 14.1 world tourney. there was another good 14.1 player -can't remember his name though- who was conspicuously absent.
John had just recently become a pool-room proprietor, and that may have been occupying his time.
As to other good 14.1 players missing from the World tourney, there were many. I'd say only 25-30 of the 48 entrants were really competitive at a world-championship level, while many superior players were missing. I'm sure timing conflicts accounted for some of the absences, but others just chose not to enter (or weren't invited). A few of the skilled 14.1 players who were missing: Ralph Souquet, Thomas Engert, Danny Harriman, Dennis Hatch, Francisco Bustamente, Eftren Reyes, Earl Strickland, George San Souci, Nick Varner, Dallas West, Jose Garcia, Neils Feijen, Mike Davis, Bobby Hunter, Allen Hopkins, Dick Lane, Bob Vanover, Ryan McCreesh, Larry Nevel, and probably a bunch of Europeans and Asians I can't remember right now.
