Schon Deflection

seems like the new Schon cue i recently bought (CX-02) deflects a whole lot more than my Jacoby, Chad Carter, or Nova. do you posters out there with Schons, do you think your Schon has more deflection than other cues you have owned?

i was shooting the Earl Forced Follow Shot thats been discussed on here lately with the Schon and i just kept over-squirting and missing the shot. the next night i pulled out my Jacoby and made it the very first try.

thoughts?

Different hardnesses in the shafts could account for this. Does the schon seem more whippy then the Jacoby?

Schon has a pressed elkmaster, just like all of my other cues.

nope, the Schon shaft doesnt seem whippy to me.

perhaps it was just one of those things, i might pull it out tonight and shoot it again.

What about the tip/shaft diameter? smaller, larger, different from one or the other?

try experimenting with different types and sizes of ferulle. IMO, it has a bigger influence on deflection than the tip.

I hate my schon shaft. Mine is an older one and there really isn't that much more deflection than my 314, but it is noticeable. I adjust pretty easily to different sticks though.

From my experience, the Schon shaft (compared to the Universal LS and the Mcdermott shaft) is stiffer and does tend to deflect more, especially on softer strokes. I had my Schon shaft turned down to 12.5mm and use a Moori Med tip, and it's still a little stiffer than the two mentioned above. I've tried the "Earl Forced Follow shot" and have had good results.

Watch the video again. What Earl is teaching is not shaft deflection, but proper stroke fundamentals. First Earl checks his allignment, then bridge, then WHAMO, he does it. Next time he misses, because he reverted back to his old bridge. But nonetheless, it boils down to fundamentals of stroke. The better you are at the fundamentals, the quicker you can adjust to different shafts/equipment.

Good pool is poetic, it has a rhythm. Watch Buddy Hall shoot, his stroke has a tempo that can be applied to any shaft/tip combo. Do you honestly think his focus is on his sticks deflection? Be careful, being an equipment junkie will slow down your progress.

My advice, (and I learned this the hard way) is to stick one shaft and master the fundamentals of the game. Your focus should be on shot, not how cool the stick is. Until you realize this, you will always be a "banger". I'm not insulting you, but at one time we were all bangers. Some nights, I still am. I revert back to my "banging days" out of bad habit and not focusing on fundamentals.

Good Luck,
Mike

I had a Schon and thought it deflected quite a bit compared to other cues I've had. The shaft was pretty stiff and I found if your stroke wasn't smooth and controlled, it was not a forgiving cue to play with.

I had a runde schon a while ago with the old yellow micarta ferrules. I think the tips were a little larger than 13mm, and although the hit felt nice, the squirt was way too much. I could not get used to it even though I play fine with solid maple shafts on other cues. Cut shots with english like earl's shot were such an adventure at aiming and pocketing, I ended up selling the cue.

Ive owned several Schon cue's, none of whitch was really whippy or deflected bad. I did use the tips supplied by Schon.

the only cue Id suggested over a Schon is a Schuler. Schon cues imho, are excellent cues. Schuler rules.

My Schon is about middle-of-the-road amongst my cues for deflection. I've got the ferrule cut down to 1/2 inch. I don't recall that really making a difference, but it may have reduced it a little.

I don't know why people are talking about whether it's whippier or stiffer than you Jacoby. That don't mean squat for deflection.

as my dear old dad used to tell me.............

"That'd Cost Money!"

It will cost you some money, but it will fix the deflection problem. If you can find a list (I think Seyberts.com has a list of players who use predator shafts) you should check out the number of pro players (male and female) who play with predator shafts. It's true that some of them are sponsored, but most of them are not sponsored.
