It could also be crooked and the faces not square.

Two tenons of different sizes, we're talking about.
Try threading two different size of tenons, one larger one threaded to the top.
Sheldon's 1 inch long 3/4 unthreaded tenon then the bolt would be fine and dead nuts.

I think I missed the different sizes part. :o That being said, I don't understand what you mean by it. :confused:

I have a friend that threads the tenon + uses a bolt.
