So I bought a Schon. I love the cue. However, it was advertised as an ST-1 and it looks more like an STL-2. Both have very similar design, but it looks like the ST-1 would have ivory diamonds in ebony inlaid on the forearm while the STL-2 has cocobolo and ebony.

The guy I bought it from kept assuring me that it was an ST-1 because a) the shaft has SCHON in gold block letters on it, and b) because the cue has a "hollow point" style pin (recessed at the tip) and that all the STL cues were made with a rounded "bullet-point" style pin.

I suppose it's possible that the inlays are just different, and I don't feel ripped off in the least. I just wanted more information and haven't felt like contacting Schon directly. Does anyone have any input?

Evan Clarke at Schon is your best bet, however I am curious about the statement of the recessed end of the screw. Was there a time that Schon changed from the recessed to the rounded and does that mean that any Schon with recessed screw was made earlier?

Yeah I think it's an STL2 too. Either way it's a great cue & I beat both of those deals by a long shot & that aska deal is pretty sweet. Thanks for the input.

EDIT: Went home & looked at the pin again. It's definitely different than in the aska pictures. It does appear to have a recessed pin while the aska cue has what I believe to be a domed pin. You can tell by the threads. The plot thickens...

and the shaft has SCHON 13 engraved on the collar in gold. the aska pics have a differently marked shaft.

Anybody?

Could the pin have been replaced from the original? Maybe it was repaired.

That pin does not even look like it would fit a regular schon thread even, but maybe I'm not seeing things right. The thread on my Joss is much tighter and I think the Schons are very very similar to Joss.

> That is more than likely the original pin. Evan experimented with this style pin in the early-mid 90's. The only thing different is the way it's screwed into the wood, and the shape of the end. Just about any other Schon shaft should fit.

The Schon pin is typically about .010 smaller on the Major and Minor diameter, making a .302-14 instead of the true 5/16 or .3125. This is why a brand-new Predator fits every time,it's tapped for the true 5/16. You will NEVER get a Schon shaft to fit another butt without opening the threads up with a tap, unless the pin is cut undersized, and bored to fit the Schon pilot. Tommy D.

St-1

Looks like an ST-1 to me, the inlays are just just a different material. I had an ST-11 with the same pin as you pictured, but it was constructed with a different wood combination in the butt, than is pictured in the flier you posted. These are nice playing cues.

Much obliged

Thanks for the input everybody.:D I don't know what to think. I guess I'm going to try to get in touch with Evan Clarke for curiosity's sake, but until then, I think I'll claim it as an ST-1! Less of the ST series made (12?) than the STL series (30?) if I remember correctly.
