Schon STL1 weight change (bolt)

I want to add about .5 oz to an Schon STL01 (now weighs 18.7 oz), but before I try this (if it's not glued in), I want to make sure the butt doesn't fall off or something. I once removed the rubber bumper then the flange bolt on a Meucci and the whole end of the cue fell off. I don't want that to happen with my Schon. Also, if the bolt under the rubber bumper is glued in, I'm not going any further--I'll send to Schon. This is something I've done many times on other cues so I think I have the right tools for the job.

Okay. Here's my questions:

1. After I remove the rubber bumper, and if the next bolt turns, does the end of the cue become unstable (will the butt fall off).

2. If the bolt under the rubber bumper comes out (if one is there), my plan is to screw in another weight bolt of the same thread size into the core (.5 oz) and then replace the bolt that I removed. Does this sound right?

3. How deep is the threaded core?

First, the butt section of the cue will be intact,unless you have another problem, when you remove the weight bolt. Be careful if the butt cap is Delrin as glues do not stick to it very well, and you could possibly break it loose.

For the bolt, I would prefer to replace the existing bolt with another one that is 1/2 oz heavier if you can. They are available from Atlas or Prather. If you must put a separate bolt in below the original screw, then I would get an allen head set screw of the right weight. Also, you want to bottom that bolt in the hole, or it will rip the threads out from the impact of hitting the cue ball. When this happens, it will be loose and rattle and you won't be able to get it out! Also, I recommend putting some type of thread lock on the screw so that it won't come loose.

I think I'd prefer to put another bolt in the core and then replace the bolt that's there already. The reason: I tend to like a cue that is a little forward balance. So, adding weight down into the core should move it forward a little. Sound logical?

Sure, that is logical, but 1/2 oz will not be much different unless there was a fairly significant difference in where that bolt goes. I think you will find that the hole is not that deep, and the difference would only be maybe an inch or so.

I could do the math on the change in balance, but it is Sunday! lol

I would think if you add any weight behind the balance point it would be more rear balanced.
If you want more foward balance take the bolt out or get a heavier shaft.
Schon weight bolts are glued in.
By the way I just got a Stl-1 yesterday.
The butt weighs 15.1 oz and the shaft weighs 4.3 oz and I dont need another shaft.

Thanks for the link. If it's going to void any warranty, I'll just leave it alone or send to Schon. I just don't like mailing cues if I can avoid it because of damage, etc.

Another thought: does anyone know the weight difference from the Schon Ivory shaft compared to the standard Schon shaft?

I had a Schon once and sent it to them to add 1/2 oz. They turned it around quickly at no charge. There shouldn't be much difference in weight between their regular and ivory shafts. You might be able to specify a particular weight when you order.

For what it's worth, Evan Clarke admitted to me ivory ferrules are prone to breakage.
