Score counting balls

Hey fellows I'm trying to build a set of ball type counters to attach to the side of my homemade light. I am wanting to have 11 balls on each of two rows and sliding on 3/8 inch wooden dowels, so I'm worried that styrofoam balls will wearout inside and out due to sliding and pushing them with a cue. Have any of you made a similar counter and do any of you know of a better 1 to 2 inch ball that I can drill for this purpose. I like the ones at the US open but want to use smaller balls. Thanks --Leonard
 
some ideas

Well, you could insert a piece of a plastic straw or something like that into the hole you drill in the styrofoam.
 
Hey thats a great idea maybe glue in some pvc waterpipe sections if there is a close size and seems like there is two small sizes and two different colors for hot or cold around 1/2 inch, and that crap will last at least two lifetimes like the Craftsman tool commercial...Thanks Leonard

If 2 1/4" isn't too large you might consider using a couple of sets of old pool balls. Your local poolroom probably has a collection of old balls that you could get cheap.

Sheesh, someone actually SELLS this? We use the same set-up in the American Legion here in town. All it is is a bunch of golf-ball-sized wiffle balls strung on a 1/8" rod. You can probably MAKE this whole thing WITHOUT any tools in less than 5 minutes for under $15 -- and I'll bet you could probably find some of the balls and maybe even the rod material in thrift shops for a lot less!

We didn't even bother to paint them -- we figured (not necessarily correctly) that the players knew how to count ... ;)
 
no one sells it i was just posting it cause it is cheap and easy to make and looks good, look in hemicudas album to see the entire room it's really nice, everyone can count but why bother when u shouldn't have to, also would make it less likely to make scoring errors

Try the plastic golf balls, with every fifth ball being a yellow one. P.S. You can paint the white ones yellow, if you can't find any. And you only need ten balls per side, since the 11th game wins the match.

Thanks for the heads-up! I had looked at the link you gave, but didn't investigate further -- the ball string looked SO NICE that I just figured (notice how I deftly avoided useage of that vulgar term "assumed"?) they were some kind of production item.

As for the "counting," I was referring to the players (hopefully ;) ) being able to count the number of balls in their various positions on the string as to why we didn't bother painting them ... :D !
 
All you have to do!

is go to a HOBBY store, that has craft type stuff. They have the balls, or beads, there in different sizes. Pool room owners have been doing this for years to make their own counters.

Beads slide easier on wire rather than dowels. Be sure to put a stopper
on both ends, so the rod itself will not slide out of the chain.

You can even paint some (red, black, whatever) to indicate the 5 and 10 bead for easier counting.
