Just for kicks, i thought i'd open up a discussion about old school vs new school players. There many similarities and also differences. I think that one of the greatest matches anyone could imagine would be yesterdays best vs todays best. Scott Frost, still in his prime, is considered the best player in the world. If he took a trip in the pool time capsule, back to '75, and play the great Ronnie Allen a little 1hole

Scott's game resembles Ronnie more than any other player of today. With his imagination, fearlessness and shot making ability.

Who would win?

I never saw Ronnie play in his prime so I can't really comment on that but I don't think Frost is the best in the world right now, Reyes is still king in one pocket. Frost beat him once for the cash and everyone proclaims Frost as the greatest. If Reyes and Frost were to do a TAR match today (say a race to 15 or so over 2 days) I'd bet on Reyes without thinking twice. I'm not trying to put Frost down at all, he's most likely the best after Reyes, but I still like Reyes in that match.

If I'm not mistaken, and chime in whenever you like Lenny, but doesn't Frost have an open invitation to ANYONE in the world to play one hole for 5 or 10K?

I was under the impressiom that Frost's offer was under the condition that the match would have to take place in Frost's poolroom in Arizona. At next years DCC, as long as Reyes' is healthy I'm sure he would be interested in an even match with anyone for big money.

I would love to see Pagulayan play Frost for 10K or more. While Frost may be more of a one pocket specialist you can never count Pagulayan out of any match, he just has so much heart and plays so well under pressure.

ronnie would get the cash, back then and today i think ronnie would give him a good run at a race to 10 or 12 but an ahead set youth wins. When ronnie gets ahead he is just too tough to overcome. can you create a poll for this also so we can see what the concensus thinks?

done deal. thanks for commenting

How Funny.............

Here's a story surrounding Ronnie:

He's bust, broke and desolate so a good friend of his helps him with some random expenses, etc. One day, Ronnie goes to this friend and is nearly in tears because he has a tooth ache that's so bad, it's making his head explode. So, Ronnie begs this friend for some cash so he can go to the dentist (which he gets). Something didn't feel right about the situation, so this friend drives out to the local track to find Ronnie spending the cash he received betting on races.

I'm not sure if this story was told to me in confidence or not, which is the ONLY reason I'm not saying who the friend was-- but rest assured... Ronnie has stories surrounding him.

P.S.

Just so I'm not like Lou and drop anonymous references, here's a clue of where that story came from:

I got it...................:groucho::rotflmao1:

A few years ago I saw Scott give an average player...guy could make a ball to two...15-1 and the break. The guy finally decided that his best chance was to just break the balls wide open and hope he would make one in his pocket or get a safe. Scott went 15 and out 3 times during a very short afternoon and won nearly every game. Scott has many gears he can shift to when needed.

Ronny in his prime would have been a great match for Scott...would love to have seen it. Ronnie today is just a shadow of his former self...still full of tricks, gimmicks, great stories and he's sometimes a lot of fun to be around...but no match for any of the top players.

I have never seen Ronnie play in his prime, so my opinion is only based on what I have heard, and thereby really doesn't mean squat.;) But, knowing pool at least somewhat, I would have to say that any one matchup would be a toss of the coin. On any given day, each could win, and maybe even by a large margin. Over repeated matchups, like every day for a month or so, I think I might have to give the edge to Frost. I think Ronnie has the edge in the moves department, but Scott has the edge in firepower. And, firepower can overcome moves more often.

Neil...I did see Ronnie Allen play in his prime...in the late 60's.
The consensus was that Ronnie was 2 years ahead of everybody else.
I've only heard that said about one other player...Efren Reyes.

Of course, it's tough comparing eras...Ronnie has said that some kids today are playing shots that he took 10 years to learn.

But when it comes to 'fire power', Ronnie had MORE than Scott.
He ran 6 racks of payball on a tough 6x12 at Cochran's in 'Frisco.
And he beat Bill Werbenuik 3 times on a 6x12 and gave him a little
weight on a 5x10.Bill shortly after became #8 seeded in the WPBSA.

So Ronnie had LOTS of fire power....
..and Scott had zero chance in an all-round.

But comparing eras is still arguable ...a lot of players, including Scott,
are playing shots that Ronnie and Efren brought to the game.

In his prime, Ronnie could beat him one handed, either hand. JMHO
