Scotty Townsend

As I have posted on this board previously I had the priviledge of watching Scotty play all through the early to mid 90's. The thing that seperates Scotty from the rest of the "champions" is that Scotty could make money in ANY environment. I am not one to say if Scotty is a champion, but i can tell you this...... I seen him beat Brian Atchley(God rest his soul) and for those of us who knew Brian knows he was a CHAMPION.

You do the math!

I've watched some pretty good hustlers in my time and I think the problem here is that, after a period of time, the hustler himself doesn't really know how good they are. They play under a whole different set of circumstances as a tournament player. There are money players that no one wants to play, not even some of the best tournament players because they know they can't win against them when it comes down to the cash. When a person is playing for the cash, they're going to play to win the cash not the tournament. Sometimes you don't have to play so hard, sometimes you do and sometimes you have to play better than you ever played before because you absolutely have to win to eat. That's pressure that most tournament players don't experience.

This is what makes Efren so great. He'll play a tournament during the day, gamble all night and win the cash and then get up the next morning and win the tournament too! There aren't many players that can survive in the same air that Efren breathes!!

I don't know Scotty and haven't seen him play but if Keith says he's a great player, you can't argue with that!

I have watched Scotty play a few times and he sure is fun to watch. But the word is that he is getting old. His eyes aren't as good as they used to be. And even though he does well in tournaments he usually folds in the end. And he even has been losing with his proposition bets. Especially after 6 or 7 JD's. Now is the time to take him on.

But on the other hand, I hear people have been saying that for the past 30 years.

Methinks, Scotty's rep is exactly what Scotty wants.

Everybody remembers who finished first in a tournament; no one remembers who finished 2nd. Nor do they remember who just happened to take away the winner's money in an after tournament matchup.

Ah, the internet is the bane of all the good road players.

I haven't posted in a long time because I feal like I can learn more by reading than by typing. However I want to put my two cents worth in here.

I have had the good fortune to have met and had some long conversations with Scotty. The one thing that clearly impresses me most about him, is his mental game. His belief in the power of the mind. When Scotty Townsend is focused on his game he is second to none that I have ever personally met, in any sport, when it comes to the mental aspect of competition.

IMHO, Scotty will be remembered as one of the greats in the game. For now I agree with jjinfla, 'His rep is just about where he wants it to be.'

Ask him to tell you about the number "9", or his motor cycle wreck, or if he ever gigged a water moccasin. Or ask him to show you how to work on your stroke with a shoe string. He is the one than can weave some stories together.

Someone tell Scotty, that Porter said hey, and to look me up next time he comes to Arkansas.

Scotty is a good player and a shot maker as well. Ive been there when ptm saw him play after all its a good idea to have me as a designated driver. I even let him play with my cue and very few get to play with my Szamboti.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,btw, hes neakin up on someone right now

To Know Him is to Love Him

:) Scotty Townsend is probably the most likeable pool player
ever on the planet. I did have a story or two about him in my book, "The Green Felt Jungle", and I've gambled both with and against Scotty on many occassions. UNfortunately everyone knows he likes to go up against the nuts so he usually is in a bad game, but often outruns them. I seen King mentioned the MIz, even before his stroke the MIz was no match for Scotty playing nine ball on any table. Scotty is now riding a motorcycle all over now and I worry to death about him and wish someone would talk him into getting rid of the damn thing. I lost another good friend last year who played pool , in a motorcycle accident , and don't care to lose another one. Scotty if you're reading this, get rid of that damn thing.......Humphrey:confused:

I will "Suggest" giving up the 2 wheels Hump but you know Scotty, suggest is all you can do. I too lost friends on motorcycles.

If you go back and look at the longest 5 threads on AZ, you will find 2 of the top 5 are about Scotty Townsend. What does this tell you? It tells you that Scotty is one of the most loved pool players ever. If anyone takes a shot at Scotty on line, they better be prepaired to be attacked from all sides. No one has more friends than Scotty.

I am proud to call Scotty Townsend my friend.

Ernesto's one hell of a player too but never won huge tournaments as he really makes more money as a table mechanic.

I'm not positive about this, but I seem to remember Ernesto winning a pretty big tournament in Japan.
