Seeking help for woods for a cue, please.

I'm thinking of having a cue made similar to the one in the photo. I would like a wood that is red or reddish brown and that will hold its color for a while for the forearm & butt. The maker has said he has cocobolo, padauk, pink ivory and redheart. I know from personal experience that cocobolo can be very beautiful. What about any of the other choices? Thanks for any help or opinions on this.

That butt handle wood is some kind of burl. I have a highly figured bocote break cue, plus cues with thuya burl / ebony points and cocobolo / black ash burl.

The cue maker told me that the handle, joint collars & butt cap are olivewood. I've seen some examples that appear to be that highly grained, but I certainly can't tell you if that's what it actually is.

If you don't care for "knots", stay away from large sections of highly figured olivewood.

You can see them on the left side of the image.

However many people, myself included, find them desirable.

I believe I would feel the same as you. It looks very attractive to me in the photo. In person might change things. I'd be willing to take that chance though.

A decision has been made. We are going with quilted narra. Something like this, I believe.

The handle looks like a highly figured Olive wood. It's very pretty, but finding a piece without inclusions can be difficult.

You could also try Masur/Karelian Birch, Hickory burl, or Black Ash burl. Gorgeous woods, but again, difficult to find without voids, knots, inclusions, etc.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don’t quite understand what you mean by WTF. The OP asked for suggestions on a red or brownish red wood, Bubinga fits that bill, it’s quite beautiful if you get a quality chunk of it, and has good playability characteristics. Soooo…wtf Walter?

Interesting to note that not one of the woods I specifically inquired about were mention and that much of the focus seemed to be on the handle instead of the forearm & butt where I was thinking of using the mentioned woods. LOL

I appreciate the replies anyway, however.

Again, the decision was made to go with Quilted Narra for the forearm & butt section, with an Olivewood Burl for the handle, joint collars & butt cap. I suspect (hope, really) that the combination will be as beautiful as I think it will be. I've never really seen finished Quilted Narra (certainly not in a pool cue) though. This should be interesting.
