Seeking Input: Archer ‘93 vs. Today

Can you imagine how good Efren would be if you gave him a modern cue on a modern table? Heck, he was kicking SVB's ass in that exhibition. Yes, it was an exhibition and thank goodness Efren is grey now.

I especially love it when the crowd says "Where?!" on his last shot and he puts in the pocket every damn time!
Are you compelled to post nonsense nonstop?

Good questions.

Today's pool players play in very well controlled environments. Tournaments, family friendly, punching machine, darts and arcades help with this controlled environment. Security guard at the door helps too. You can walk into a pool hall and get a game if someone is up to it.

Someone mentioned how much better the equipment today is but that is making an argument for past players too. They were shooting with baseball bats. LOL

Heck, there are people here that have never stepped foot in a smoky pool room.

are you saying dennis orcullo, lee van corteza, johann chua, anton raga grew up and developed in these clean, controlled environments with great equipment? if so, i'm really looking forward to your next post 🙂

It's nonstop nonsense

Shane has won everything there is to win.
If you believe that, you are misinformed. In fact, Shane hasn't won any of the China Open, the All Japan, the UK Open, the European Open, the WPA World 10ball, the Mosconi MVP or the World Games gold medal. In these pursuits alone, Filler already has prevailed six times. Shane, at 41, has two world championships on his resume, same as Gorst and Filler, who are both in their mid-20s.

Van Boening and Filler played in the finals of the 2023 International Bigfoot 10-Ball. Shane won 10-7.
Thanks. I figured if anyone would know whether they had ever played, it would be you. I hope we will see them on the nine-footer somewhere down the road.

SVB works harder than anyone I’ve ever known in pro pool, and I know lots of the top guys well. Outside of pool as well, just as friends, not just pool friends.

I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as SVB on his game. He’s earned everything he’s won and it wasn’t an easy road for him.

Earl I don’t know, only met a few times and spoke to on the phone. I do know Earl works super hard on his game as well.

JA and Sigel of course worked on their game, but not near as disciplined as SVB in terms of practice ethic. Not tourneys or travel-all the top players work hard. But JA and Mike are just super talented, SVB is a hard worker & some talent ofc , but not the raw talent of Earl, JA or Mike.

I can’t speak of Buddy or Nick, as I wasn’t around them when they were on top.

Filler is beyond talented, Gorst it’s my guess hard work and talent. I said 4 years ago everyone else going forward is playing for 3rd. Yes SVB is in the mix now and will be for a few more years as he takes care of himself. But time beats everyone eventually.

Who’s best? Idk , I’d guess Filler, Earl, JA, Sigel, Fedor had/have the most talent in no particular order. Maybe Nick & Buddy but I wasn’t there. There are other players as well. Always hard to say with certainty.

What is certain is who doesn’t have talent…..

A race to 120 was suggested…….we’ll see. I hope!

Safe bet it would be 10ball. Shane knows better than to try Josh at 9ball. I know who would win if SVB played Josh. The fans!
Yes that’s correct 10B, imo SVB has a very good chance to win. He’s not drawing dead in that game.

Would be an amazing 3 day sweat.

Knowing what I know, it’s more likely than unlikely to happen. Not 100% but it’s not off the table as a “event” this year.

I don't think I've ever watched a race to more than 25 from beginning to end, but I might have to make an exception if this match comes off.

100 over 3 days is a lot of 10B, I usually watch the first day, if it’s close then I’ll keep going.

I would like to see a Master of the Table type of race between SVB, Gorst and Filler where they play each other in a Round Robin format.

Say 30 racks of 9 ball for 1 point per rack; 30 racks of 10 ball for 1 point per rack; 30 racks of 8 ball for 1 point per rack and 10 racks of one-pocket for 3 points per rack.

This way each player plays 200 racks for a possible maximum of 240 points, if my thinking is correct.

This could be a huge PPV event. I think l would bet on Gorst for this type of event.

That would be cool, very cool!

There are lots of prop bets that could be made with a format like that.

Yeah, that would make for a great event, although it sounds like too much pool.

I'm with you. As the Master of the Table in three of the last four Derby City Classics, Fedor must be judged the best all-around player in the world right now. He'd be tough to bet against.

It's only 300 racks total. Maybe 5 days during a winter break.

It’s hard to pick a loser with that line up. Wow.

Going by results yes Fedor at this moment is the guy to beat. But betting against Filler or SVB seems irresponsible.

How strong is that?

Hope your good Stu

they are all very close. you can take your pick on who is best yesterday.

who is the best 9 ball player in the world? the guy who won the last big world tournament of 9 ball.

if you want to know who is best have anyone who wants the title to put up a large sum of their own money and play for it on a long race of all the games combined. not just one game. that is the test of skill under pressure.
