Shattering all expectations! And I kid you not!

It's the Php million tournament from one of the sport's great ambassadors - the fighting senator from the Pool Capital of the World the National Fist, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao!

51-53php per dollar

We have family in GenSan that knows Manny and his mother personally..... Trying to get a game set up and schedule for when he will be in town and has time. If this happens, we will definitely post up some pics/video and the experience.

First place in singles is around 10grand US. That's a long trip to chase that kind of money. After air, room, food, etc. you better get 1st or 2nd. Great event i'm sure but kinda pricey if you live very far away.

I hope his brother or crew don't take a portion of the prize money like they did a few yrs ago witht the WPA sanctioned 10-ball event which Ko Pin Yi won...utterly embarrassing!

This is the fourth tournament Manny has produced in GenSan. I went to two of them. There were some hi-jinks with the prize money and hopefully that's been straightened out by now. These events are not really designed to attract foreign players, but they are welcome to come and play if they like. Nobody's barred!

Manny does this as a way for the many Filipino players to have a good tournament with decent prize money locally. Believe me a $10,000 score over there is like winning $30,000 here (or more). In this tournament you will see all the top Filipino players that you're already familiar with, plus forty or fifty guys who play just as good that you don't know. All the top hustlers over there turn out for Manny's tourneys.

There are literally dozens of players over there that you never heard of that would wipe the floor with almost all our top guns. Last time I was there, only Shane, Morra and Thorsten got any respect from the Pinoys. They all know about Shane, so he is given a wide berth. A few of the lesser known hustlers tried gambling with John and he took them off. I didn't see Thorsten gamble with anyone.

It's a cheap flight to GenSan from Manila or Cebu and hotel rooms can be had for $40-50 a night (or less). If you happen to be interested in a trip to the Philippines to see what pool is like over there, this is a good opportunity. You will see a higher level of pool overall than you see in our tournaments here, except for the U.S. Open and DCC. Just a word of caution though. Do not venture outside the city! GenSan is in Mindanao, the home territory of several terrorist groups. They operate mainly in the outlying areas, but you will see military roadblocks on all the main arteries in and out of the city.

P.S. Manny will play and he doesn't play bad either!

The above is grossly understated.

There are certainly dozens of unknowns that not could but would beat all but the top players here. Some of the unknowns I've came across would rival everyone here below Shane imo.

Couple times a year a few of them pass through my area. Sometimes I pony up the dough and try em for a set or two. Always extremely talented and always...lol... unknowns.

As for the dangers in going over there .... whew, never again, the pool competition alone is a nightmare. Add the FACT that we (Americans) are hunted like Easter eggs, well, even if my game was strong enough I would stay my a55 right here.

Would be nice though. Just not worth the risk.

What do you consider cheap airfare? I was just curious so i checked Tulsa to GenSanCity. Cheapest i found was just under 1,700bux. I wouldn't go anyway but i'm sticking to my story that its a losing proposition for any US player other than maybe SVB. Oh yeah, and the added attraction of getting kidnapped and/or murdered. City-wide alert in the last week or so for a string of bombings. http://www.mindanews.com/top-stories/2018/09/gensan-still-in-heightened-alert-status/ Sounds like a real holiday spot.

You must not have read my post thoroughly. Once again I said this event is designed primarily for Filipino players and for them it's a cheap date. If you book in advance you might find a flight from Manila to GenSan for $100 RT.

To fly round trip from the USA to the Philippines it's hard to find a direct flight under $1,000. The reference I made was that if you were planning to take a trip to Philippines, that might be a good time to do it, since you could see all their best player in action while you were there.

By the way, it's a lot more dangerous on the streets of any city in the USA then it is in the Philippines. I would advise avoiding certain areas of Mindanao though, mostly in the western regions of that Island. You might want to check and see the murder rate in General Santos City. It's probably less than in Tulsa, far less. In fact I would bet on it!

I did a little checking and discovered that Tulsa is one of the most dangerous cities in Oklahoma to live in. Meanwhile in GenSan, ONE foreigner was killed (an Aussie) in 2017! All other murders were committed by and against other Filipinos.

Most violent crime in Tulsa, as in most US cities, is in one or two areas. Lived here my whole life and can't recall a city-wide alert for bombings. I just scanned the Midanao news and that place is on edge right now. BTW, Tulsa's first quarter homicide no. was 12 vs. 9 for GenSan(gotta love the internet). Cities are about the same size so HOW much safer is this place?? If you go i hope you have fun and are safe.

Like I said, if you or anyone else decide to go then it is advisable to stay within the confines of the city. I wouldn't be taking any bus trips to other southern cities from there. Actually, GenSan is quite a bit larger than Tulsa with nearly 600,000 residents (Tulsa is close to 400,000).

I have been there twice before for earlier events put on by Manny, but it's doubtful I'll make it to this one. I'm sure that many foreigners who either live there already or live in the Philippines will go to see this one. GenSan is pretty much like being anywhere else, including Tulsa. You have to watch your back, particularly at night. Street crime can happen anywhere! Heck, I live in a nice, middle class neighborhood in Los Angeles and I'm extra wary about going out at night. The vampires come out at night!

Someone warn that Canadian dude .
He takes his motorcycle and drives ALL OVER SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES.
He even took 5-hour boat ride to a remote island some 30 minutes away from Indonesia already.

General Santos City is safer than Manila .
Max Eberle has been there . Then went north to Davao City ( home city of the current president ).
The MP tournament is held in a mall.
Pac turns 40 this December.
He's been a strong supporter of pool down there.
Unfortunately, he closed his pool hall when he became a born-again Christian.
He no longer gambles in public.
But, I had a word from a very reliable source, he got in action against a local millionaire last year and he beat him for P3M. That's about $60K.
Pac can shoot some and has big heart.

Throw away the homicide rate .
Most of those "homicides" in Gen San are drug dealers/users/criminals who are put to sleep by the cops.

Is not gambling in public kinda like Baptists only dancing if the lights are out? ;)

Last tourny he had with the short pay-If you even asked if the players had been paid, you got silence like you were asking about John Gotti's towing business.. The only answer i ever got was-Hey he just had a 150 million dollar fight-He is too important to be questioning. Makes sense, right?

:):) I read that Pacman is really a kind hearted, generous guy. He is supporting 10,000 scholars and has built several hospitals, schools and hundreds of houses for the poor out of his own pocket. It is normal to see hundreds of people lined up outside his house asking for handouts. One time, he met an old ice cream vendor and when he found out that the guy was recovering from stroke and is the main support for all his kids and grandchildren, he gave him all of the money he had in his pocket and gave him a house and lot.

I think it is his relatives who is handling the prize money of his tourneys and I bet he does not even know that it is being mishandled. He appears to be a very trusting guy.
