I just checked with my local True Value. They didn't have any Butchers Bowling Alley Wax in stock. They are placing an order for me (no shipping costs). It will be here sometime next week. Cost around $7.00.
I've tried different things and enjoy searching for the "Holy Grail" to keep my equipment clean and SLICK. The Magic Eraser with denatured alcohol works great for cleaning. I've recently started using 3M papers for polishing fiber optic connectors to burnish with. My goal is to have something that lasts a long time between cleanings/conditionings. I think I'm at the 4-5 week period between cleanings. NOTE: I do wipe my cue down between games and finishing for the night. I will change the schedule if I am getting ready for tournament or big event.
When it gets particularly humid I still use a glove as soon as I feel things getting too sticky. I also carry a waterless hand sanitizer in my bag to clean my hands with as needed. When I later get home I go through the process of reconditioning my shaft using a lathe using the above described methods.
I no longer waste my money on the cue shaft specific products. I find spending anywhere from $5 and above for 2-6 oz criminal. I remember one product that smelt like and felt like a certain bathroom cleaner. I started using the bathroom cleaner when the product ran out. I just didn't leave the product on for any length of time.
Boy I should see about marketing a specialized cue shaft cleaner product that is nothing more than liquid car wax. I would call it PM "Pure Magic" shaft sealer and conditioner. My tip burnisher product would be called PM tip burnisher. Of course it would be a solution of my spit and distilled water. Say 2 ozs for the bargain price of $6.97. I would include brown paper bags with the product. I think a whole kit for $25 might be worthwhile.
Don't get me wrong I don't have any issues with people making money I do have some issues with how specific pool related products are over priced considering what the items really cost.
Of course when you consider the specialized laminated shafts I would go with what the manufacturer recommends. On a side note, if the manufacturer says only use my $30 cleaner conditioner or you void the warranty then I would probably look for a different after market shaft.
