Shaft care

I have a question about how to keep my shafts straight. I dont leave them in my truck. I put them back in my room as soon as im done using them but I just cannot to save my life seem to keep a shaft straight. I just wanted to get some good advice before I buy something nice and ruin it. Thanks

ever run into a paul torrez from the killeen area please get contact info he was a civilian barber on ft hood and a solid 7, 20 years ago

Well its a Jack Kampan (might of mispelled his last name) sneaky. But I got a new OB shaft from the factory and not to say that its their fault but the shaft set at my house for a day and when I took it to go play the shaft was warped. Could it of possibly happened during shipping? Idk not trying to point fingers. If I would of sent it back Im sure they would have made it right.

do you have a hard case ? maybe a local cuemakers shaft would be more used to your environment are you in the area where belton lake ??
makes it a little more humid than people think of central texas being

Over the last 35 years of me playing pool I have never had a shaft warp to the point of being useless. I live in San Antonio and have had just about every cue out there and I leave them in my car, truck, summer, winter, etc.

Send the shaft back,OB are nice people.As far as the cue I always put mine in a room that the tempature stays consistent.Besides that if the wood is not seasoned properly the cue will warp and that includes the shaft.Goodluck

a laminated/aftermarket shaft will handle temperature differentials better than the standard 2 and 4 piece laminated OEM shafts.

Do you keep the cue in a case? Also, do you check the straightness with it on the cue as well as seperate? Could be a joint issue on the butt if all shafts seem warped on it.

I just wanted to point out that the OP is clearly from Texas...not a car...not an SUV...not even a vehicle...it has to be a "truck"...

I would definitely agree with the advice on contacting OB and have them replace the shaft...there's no reason for that to warp...

Perhaps you "hit the lottery" (not in a good way) and just happened to have come across two poorly made shafts...not that they were made/sold that way intentionally, but every once in awhile, a bad shaft can slip through the "quality control" check-point. Perhaps you just got two in a row.

I'd get the OB replaced and see if if happens again...

Do you clean your shaft and if so how and what do you use to clean it with?

You shouldn't HAVE to keep a shaft straight. If its a quality product normally you would have to do something to screw it up. I'm sure there are exceptions but if this is happening over and over the odds are better that it's something you have done to it rather than it just happening all on it's own.

BTW dont soak it down with water and then sand it with a 300 grit sand paper. I know it sounds dumb but I know a guy that actually did that..........and yes it warped. The only thing that amazed me was that he was surprised that it warped and decided that "Brand X" cues are junk!

keep it in the case and keep the case in a standup position any shaft that has a pro taper if laying on its side will suffer the effects of gravity if its prone to warp as the joint end and tip will be supported but the center won't. Also use a quality cue case after you swap out that shaft. good luck.

Looks like you got some great advice thus far. The suggestions to contact OB and talk to them about warranty/replacement is the best "short term" solution.

One question though; you mentioned, "...the shaft set (I assume you mean sat, and not set, as in waiting for glue to dry or something?) at my house for a day..." How was the shaft (or the entire cue) sitting? Was it fully assembled and leaning against a wall against its tip? If so, this will warp a shaft very quickly, especially in a humid environment. Even the best shafts are prone to warping if bowing pressure is applied to one side (even slight, as in just propping the cue against a wall) for a period time in a humid environment, or one with many temperature changes.

Also, that's a good suggestion about not laying the shaft down on its side on a flat floor or other flat surface for a long period of time, due to the taper (i.e. shaft only being supported by its tip and joint end, and sagging in the middle). Best to keep the shaft in a case, and store the case standing up.

I have no proof

I have no proof but I think joint protecters help keep moisture out of the center of grains in the shaft. Then only cues that have ever warpped have had no protecters on them. Just an observation.
