Shaft construction that gives it its characteristics

I'm curious what exactly it is about different types of shafts that gives it certain characteristics.

The LD market has exploded and i'm wondering what specifically it is about a shaft that gives it a crisp or soft hit. Why a Jacoby Edge Hybrid with sixty-four precisely engineered veneers plays different or gives a different feel than a Predator or an OB. Is there an explanation or reason why one would be more easily adoptable or is that always subjective to what the player has been used to? What really makes a shaft "better," other than what you like playing with?

Are there certain things that can guarantee you a specific type of hit in a shaft? Ferrule material/weight/construction, number of splices/veneers/parts in the wood, laminated or not, tip construction (layered, etc.), joint-type, pin, etc.?

I'm aware of Dr. Dave's website, but i'm also interested in hearing from people who have tried lots of things under the sun, and people who invest their time in making these products.

I believe the best hit will be from a solid maple shaft with an uncapped ferrule and a med layered tip cut down half way.

If you have a thin shaft, leave the joint half of the shaft alone and only the front 12 - 14 thin.
