Shaft coring question

I need to core and re-tap a 3/8-11 shaft, but I do not have any
phenolic rod of a big enough diameter. Do you guys ever use purpleheart
or other woods for this application. Or do I need to order the phenolic?

I usually just use maple, but have used phenolic and purpleheart. It will change the hit, IMO, when you use different materials. If you have the ability to turn down phenolic, I can send you a small piece, just PM me the info. I have a few dia. availible. If you can't turn it, just let me know the dia. and I'll cut it down for you, no charge.

I've gotten to the point that I don't like tapping maple for joint threads any time. It doesn't hold up as good as many other materials. I put in a purple heart plug into nearly all shafts that I make. I then drill and tap the purple heart for either an insert or for threads. It's both cheap and holds threads well.

I've tried some brown phenolic ferrule material a couple of times but it was just to hard to tap. I figured there was to many other sources than the phenolic which, I feared, was just dulling my expensive taps. I also tried some ABS but it was to soft and I feared it would cross thread in no time. Since I have tons of purple heart I just started using that
