Shaft Diamater measurement

Over the years I have always wonder where to measure to get a shaft diameter or how. My current shafts are advertised at 12.4mm, but I measure 12.49 at the ferrule.

most measure at the ferrule. its common for a little variance. difference in 12.4 and 12.5 is TINY.

90 microns ain't gonna break anyone. 45 microns bigger on each side. A human hair is around 40 microns. Your shaft is 2 human hairs bigger than nominal... don't sweat the small stuff! :)

Other than completely agreeing with your point, I was always taught that a human hair was between 50-90microns, 70 on average (just under 0.003").

Also, people should realize that just because their $8 HoboFreight calipers read down to 0.01mm they aren't accurate or repeatable to that. Couple that with the likelihood that the normal person doesn't know how to use them properly and we are left with differences in shaft diameter of less than a half millimeter not really meaning jack.

But, hey, all of these cuemakers claim to hold less than 0.001" accuracy....

Assuming accurate measurements, your shaft is oversized by 0.0035"
Keep in mind we're talking about something round, so you would only need to cut half of that much off to make it 12.4mm.

I really don't care about the 12.4 being super accurate. My old shafts were about 12.55mm and i was going to settle with the 12.4 but seeing i have a happy medium

In your professional "experienced" opinion, what would be the difference in a cue built in Florida then shipped to Arizona?

How would a cue get from Florida to Arizona?

I don't know, maybe a swallow carried it.

You're telling me a twenty ounce cue could be carried 2000 miles by a four ounce bird?

Well, that depends, what is the airspeed of an unladen swallow?

African swallow or European swallow?

WTF are you talking about?

If someone can tell the difference between 12.4 and 12.5 mm tip diameter, I bow to their pool godliness skills. Changing the tip will likely make a much bigger difference.
