Shaft diameter questions

What are your thoughts on using a thinner shaft say 11.75 vs a thicker 12.75 shaft. Wondering if the thinner shaft will produce more deflection. Even though its low deflection shaft.

I have a Dominiack cue with a mike Webb low deflection shaft.(Most of the time i love it). It's a thinner shaft wouldn't say thinner than a z2. Some times I have to play with another cue because I think there's something going on when i over cut a shot and i blame it on the shaft being so thin. But I have let amateur and pros play with it and they say it has very low deflection. And they all play with predators. I know it's all in my head but its tough to over come sometimes.

Any thoughts about shaft diameters would be great. Thanks in advance.

Best shaft is 11.75, least amount of deflection, and this size deflection gets cancelled when you shoot stun english with about a tip and 1/2. Also the bridge hand location is normally around 7 or 8" with a tip of english the deflection is minimum unless you have 9 diamond shot. It take getting used to.

There are a lot of factors in deflection, but generally a thinner shaft will squirt the ball less (unless it's conical and really stiff) I used to play with an 11 mm long taper whippy as hell and it was fun for awhile. Almost no squirt. Some people swear they can spin the ball more with a thinner shaft, but this is only because we use the distance between the edge of the tip and the edge of the ball to determine how much english we're using, so obviously a smaller tip would be further from center if you're aiming the same distance from edge of tip to edge of ball. In other words, someone used to a fat shaft will use more English than they think when using a smaller shaft. I love the way a 12.25 feel, but I like the power a full size shaft gives you. I play with a 12.7 ish and it's perfect for me.

Interesting im digging this thread:thumbup: Some pretty useful information coming in, thi is great because i ordered my my new Spitz last week

Stiffness doesn't matter. I use a 9-10mm shaft with a very stiff conical taper and it squirts much less than fatter shafts that are more flexible (actually less than any other shaft I've tried).

I would hesitate to listen to listen to naji.
I am always have to question when people make statements about something being the best.
The diameter of the shaft is not the determining factor of deflection. There are many factors including the taper and the end mass. End mass being the most important.

Also just because a shaft is ld does not mean you will like it. Kind of like shooting with a limp noodle. Sure you can make balls but it does make it tougher to move the cb around the table.

well i just played with a old 314 that was 12.75 or 13mm that dechaine let me try and i played lights out with it. im going to be playing with that shaft for a while and see how i do with it. thanks for your ideas guys. but keep it coming as well.

Since the vast majority of the shaft's end mass is the shaft itself, its diameter is key to its squirt rating.

[low squirt] does make it tougher to move the cb around the table.
I don't think so. Why do you?

Hi Clyde,
Just for your info, when I made you this shaft, you asked if I could make the deflection characteristics similar to an original o.b. which I did but I also make one with less deflection than that. I offer different levels because of different players needs and or desires. I make shafts from 13.25 down to 10.5mm.

i know mike im not knocking ur shaft. i should've ordered it a bit thicker. i will be getting a new one from you soon because nothing else i've tried hits like yours on my cue. its all in my head i think. you saw me play pretty good with it the other night at snookers and against todd when i won 8-0. well talk to you next time i swing by snookers. thanks

Your becoming a nightmare to play against and I couldn't be more proud of you. The good part if you get another one is:, I can always make it smaller and at no charge if you want it done within a month of recieving it.
