Shaft inserts for large pins?

I was wondering if it is possible to use a shaft insert of some kind with a brass 3/8-11 pin. Similar to a piloted 5/16-14 pin.

Yes, phenolic or oily woods are my faves.
I've used bocote and madagascar rosewood.

Ok, I have having a new toy made and was wondering about the advantages/disadvantages of using a shaft insert and a 3/8-11 pin.

shouldn't be any disadvantages oher than a change in hit, which could be advantageous or disadvantageous, but the advantage would be longer thread life.

i hit some balls with a cue that had an Oliewood insert and thoguht it made for a louder hit.

Hi.
I just put a phenolic insert in 3/8x10 and made it piloted and the hit is solid .Another AZer just got a cue from me with a insert for a 3/8x10 and he said it hit like a 1 piece cue. What that means to you i leave for you .I like it and will keep doing them unless some1 doesnt want it on a ordered cue from me.Not that hard to do but its is a little pain in the butt but I think it worth it. Here's a pic . Jeff

No.
He uses a proprietary insert.
I dunno what it is.
Some NASA material.

Proprietary huh. That would make it hard to get :D

So I guess some cue makers have toyed with different types of plastics etc?

Yes. He tried Delrin too. My shaft had it after it was fitted for another cue. It did alright but it was scratched for his new and much better one.
I tried Delrin too but scratched b/c it crossthreaded too easily.

I think half-inch diam. linen phenolic would be fine. Not canvas b/c it's too noisy.
i'm back to the shop. late

plus delrin doesnt glue well so over time i would be scared about that holding up

phenilic or ebony would be my choice

Saw my first 3/8 -10 with a brass insert this past weekend. Have no idea what kind of cue it was. Shaft weighed a ton.

I've seen two of that kind.
One was a private label made by Pechauer.
One was a custom maker from Louissiana.

I'm not a cue maker in any sense of the word so I'll trust my curiosity with you experts. :D

Does using an insert with these larger pins warrant concern for structural integrity? Meaning, you have to use a large insert, so how does that affect the "sidewall" of the shaft? I assume it makes it quite a bit thinner than normal.

Thanks,
Craig

If the epoxy holds like it should it should be just as strong if not stronger then wood alone.

I definitely like the material Zylr uses....

I have hit with cues that had 3/8x10 or 3/8x11 pins with bocote, phenoli, and probably some other woods. I like what it does for the hit with some of these.

I am interested in how the hit is effected.

My two favorite "hits" are from 3/8-11 pins and/or 5/16-14 piloted so my thoughts were what would happen if you combined the two
