Do you send your custom to the maker for shaft maintenance or do you have someone local do it? I was just wondering everyones input on it.

You really have to be more specific. Are you replacing tips, a ferrel, joint, or what?

You should define what you mean by maintenance a little better. A new tip? Remove a ding? Clean up and smooth it?

I go to a local cuemaker for a new tip (Tim Prince). He does a much better job than I could do by myself, and it's worth what he charges (not much). Many on this board prefer to do it themselves, however.

If I get a ding in the cue, I try to remove it myself by placing a very small piece of wet paper towel on the ding and holding it there with a rubber band for a half hour or so. If it doesn't pop out the ding the first time I repeat the treatment, then smooth it with some cue papers (like Cue Smooth). So far it's always worked, but if it didn't I take it to the cuemaker if the ding really bothered me.

To smooth the cue I use a little water and rub briskly with a microfiber towel, then follow that up by heating up the wood by rubbing it with leather. Most on this board will never use water, but that's what the guy that made my cue (the late Ray Schuler) recommended and it's still straight after 27 years. I've used Magic Eraser to get the blue out (it works), but I'm not sure I will do that anymore. The blue doesn't bother me so much - not like missing shots bothers me.

I do all the tips, ferrules, shaft cleaning, ding removal, resealing, waxing, burnishing etc..myself, but then again, I am one of the local cue repair guys.

i would like to learn how to put on tips because theres not really anyone that puts on tips besides cory b. and Im sure he is busy enough as it is..

I started out with the porper big shaver, and one of those circular sanders to sand the ferrule flat. I hated the big shaver(easy to damage the shaft), but I learned how to use it effectively.

I see you are in the Martinsburg area. There is a local fella that does our tips. He plays in the local Monday night "money" league. PM me if you want his name. Or I can give him your name and number, either way.

There are no facilities in my area within 40 miles so I started doing all my own work several years ago. For tips I use a crutch tip/electric drill lathe setup posted here on the forum. I like a clean cue and ferrule when I play so I use a Willard dime shaper, magic eraser, and leather burnisher after each session. Some Butcher's Bowling Floor Wax about once a month or so. Rarely get a ding but when I do I'll dampen a piece of paper towel and rubber band it around the shaft followed by a light sanding with a super fine film.

I do most of my own maintenance as far as dings and shaft conditioning goes. There's a routine of stuff I do to my shaft once maybe every three months. I keep a small kit of goodies inside my case that I use in this order:

Magic Eraser
Paperclip
Paper Towel
Lighter
Nick's Edge papers
Piece o' leather belt

Magic Eraser cleans the shaft and opens it up a little bit. I dampen a small square of paper towel and place it over any dings in the shaft. Heat up the paperclip nice and toasty, hit the paper towel with it until you see steam, and let go. Rinse, repeat as needed. Smooth out the shaft with the Nick's Edge, and burnish it shut with the leather.

As far as hardware goes, I take my cue to whoever's available or whoever's cheapest without being a hackjob.

The Magic Eraser everyone is talking about, is it the MR. Clean Magic Eraser?
Or is it a Magic Eraser by some billiard manufacturer?

Yeah, that would be cool. Sky Room, that is the old AJ Marbles right? Down on Rock Cliff? Shoot me a PM and we'll exchange numbers.

Yes, it's the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser you can buy at almost any grocery store. A couple of days ago, while shopping at the .99 Cent store, I ran across some Rinso Magic Eraser. I bought it and you can't tell the difference between it and Mr. Clean.
